At just 25, Tunisian-French filmmaker Kenz Benmosbah is preparing to make her feature debut with I Think She Hates Me, a romantic comedy that reframes the pain of first heartbreak for a global, Gen-Z audience. Told across dual timelines, the film explores the highs of falling in love and the gut-punch of losing it - blending emotional honesty with sharp comedic timing.

Benmosbah’s journey began at the Manarat Film Festival in Tunis, where she worked under acclaimed producing partners Dora Bouchoucha (Academy member) and Lina Chaabane, two pioneers of contemporary Tunisian cinema. Their mentorship introduced her to the inner workings of Mediterranean film culture and built the collaborative foundation she continues to draw from today.

From there, she joined the team behind Portrait of a Lady on Fire - the 2019 Cannes Film Festival Best Screenplay winner and one of the most celebrated French films of the past decade. That experience introduced her to producer Nadim Cheikhrouha and director Kaouther Ben Hania. Together, they worked on Four Daughters (Les Filles d’Olfa), which went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature - only the second Oscar nomination in Tunisia’s history.

Crossing the Atlantic, Benmosbah was accepted into the American Film Institute Conservatory, one of the world’s most selective film programs (acceptance rate ~1%). While there, she co-produced and directed Dead Girl, which screened internationally, including at the 29th LASIFF, one of the largest Academy Award–qualifying festivals in the United States.

At the same time, she produced Borders, marking the beginning of her ongoing collaboration with Danish cinematographer Mads Fridolin Vejlby (DFF). Borders will premiere at the 23rd Tallgrass Film Festival this fall, a respected showcase known for supporting bold independent voices.

Benmosbah is in active development for I Think She Hates Me, which has already attracted producers in Los Angeles and Paris and sparked early industry interest. With her debut feature on the horizon, she’s positioning herself at the intersection of European, North African, and American cinema - telling stories that resonate globally while carving out a distinct creative voice.
