As discussions around retirement preparedness and social security gain momentum in India, expanding pension awareness beyond salaried employment is increasingly being viewed as a national priority. With micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) forming the backbone of the country’s economy, policymakers are placing greater emphasis on engaging business owners and workers who operate outside traditional employment structures.

In this context, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), a central government body, conducted a government workshop on pension awareness in collaboration with StartupFlora. The Jaipur programme, held earlier this year, was among the largest MSME-focused pension awareness engagements outside major national platforms, following similar outreach initiatives conducted during Vibrant Gujarat.

Historically, pension planning in India has been closely associated with formal employment, leaving a large section of entrepreneurs and small business employees without structured retirement options. As MSMEs continue to contribute significantly to employment generation and economic growth, ensuring long-term financial security for this segment is increasingly being recognised as both an economic and social necessity.

During the Jaipur workshop, officials from PFRDA led awareness sessions on pensions and long-term financial preparedness for MSMEs. A session addressed by Mr. Manmeet Nagar, Assistant General Manager (AGM), PFRDA, focused on the importance of pension inclusion for non-salaried segments. Representatives from banks and Points of Presence (PoPs), including SBI and HDFC Bank, were also present to assist participants with onboarding-related queries.

The workshop witnessed participation from over 300 MSME owners and entrepreneurs, reflecting strong interest in government-led pension initiatives. StartupFlora handled the programme facilitation and enabled open discussions, allowing MSME participants to raise questions not only about pensions but also about other government initiatives. This approach reflected a growing recognition that awareness and clarity are key to improving the adoption of public policy measures.

Following the event, discussions between Mr. Hemant Chutani of StartupFlora and Mr. Manmeet Nagar of PFRDA focused on the need for sustained pension awareness programmes for MSMEs, including plans to conduct similar government workshops on a monthly basis across different cities in Rajasthan and other states, with a pan-India outlook.

With MSMEs continuing to play a central role in India’s economic growth story, sustained efforts to integrate them into the country’s pension and social security framework are expected to remain a key focus area for policymakers and ecosystem stakeholders in the years ahead.
