With 27 years in entertainment, Sanket ‘Don’ Vanzara brings his creative instincts, understanding of human behaviour and keen sense of changing audience tastes to Don Vanzara Showbiz.*
Two people can look at the same situation and see two completely different stories. One may see an ordinary family argument. The other may see the beginning of a compelling drama. For producer Sanket ‘Don’ Vanzara, that difference in perspective is what makes storytelling interesting.
Having spent 27 years in Indian entertainment, Vanzara has developed an instinct for what makes people watch, react and remember. His understanding comes not just from working in the industry, but from observing people, their relationships, contradictions and the world around them.
“The most interesting stories are often right in front of us. It depends on how you look at them. Sometimes, one small incident or an unusual character can give you an idea that stays in your head,” says Vanzara.
It is this curiosity that shapes his creative approach to Don Vanzara Showbiz.
Vanzara believes a producer must have a point of view. Recognising a popular genre or following what is working in the market is not enough. What matters is the ability to see something others may have missed, whether it is an unexpected character, an unusual relationship or a fresh take on a familiar emotion.
He is particularly drawn to the contradictions that make people human. Someone confident in public may be insecure in private. A seemingly selfish person may surprise everyone with an act of kindness. These layers, he believes, make characters believable and stories memorable.
“People are never just good or bad. They have layers. When a character surprises you but still feels believable, you know there is something worth exploring,” he says.
For Vanzara, creative instinct goes hand in hand with understanding the audience. He believes knowing what people enjoy is important, but understanding why they enjoy it is what separates an original storyteller from someone following a formula.
“Whenever something becomes successful, everyone wants to make something similar. But the more interesting question is why it worked. Was it the characters, the emotion or the timing? Unless you understand that, you are only copying what you see,” he explains.
That understanding matters even more today, when Indian audiences move effortlessly between television, films, streaming shows and mobile entertainment. Their exposure has widened, their expectations have changed and familiar storytelling formulas no longer guarantee attention.
Yet Vanzara does not believe audiences necessarily want complicated narratives. Sometimes, a simple idea, handled with imagination and honesty, can leave a greater impression than an elaborate production.
He also challenges the assumption that commercial entertainment must be predictable. For him, popular appeal and originality are not opposing ideas. The real challenge is to understand what people love while giving them something they did not expect.
“You cannot ignore the audience and say you are only making something for yourself. But you also cannot keep giving people exactly what they have already seen. Somewhere between those two is where exciting entertainment happens,” he says.
This balance is central to the identity he wants to build for Don Vanzara Showbiz.
Rather than defining the company by a particular genre or platform, Vanzara wants its work to reflect a recognisable creative sensibility. He is interested in stories with personality, characters with depth and ideas that offer more than the obvious.
For him, being different simply for the sake of it has little value. Every creative choice must add something to the experience. Humour should feel natural, drama should earn its emotion and a twist should reveal something meaningful rather than exist merely to shock.
“Anybody can say they want to make good content. The question is what good content means to you. For me, it has to have a personality. There should be something in the storytelling that makes it stand apart,” he says.
Despite his experience, Vanzara believes familiarity can sometimes limit creativity. He wants to remain curious, understand younger audiences and challenge his own assumptions about what works.
That openness is what he hopes will define the next chapter of his journey.
“I have spent 27 years in this industry, but I still want to feel the excitement of discovering an interesting idea. I don't want to look at everything through the lens of what has worked before. That curiosity is what keeps me going," he says.
For Vanzara, a producer's creative identity is not defined by how many stories he brings to the screen, but by the perspective he brings to each one.
