As artificial intelligence reshapes the future of work, educators are increasingly asking whether traditional examinations can truly capture the skills students need. A new initiative by Rishihood University argues that curiosity not memorisation could be one of the most valuable competencies for the next generation.
For decades, India's education system has largely measured academic success through marks, rankings and board examination scores. While these metrics evaluate what students know, they often leave little room to assess how students think, how they question, connect ideas, solve unfamiliar problems or approach complexity.
Yet these very abilities are emerging as some of the most sought-after human skills in an age increasingly defined by artificial intelligence and automation.
Against this backdrop, Rishihood University has introduced what it describes as India's first nationwide assessment focused exclusively on measuring students' Curiosity Quotient (CQ).
The inaugural National Curiosity Olympiad 2026 (NCO'26) invited students from Classes IX to XII across the country to participate in an assessment designed not around textbook recall but around inquiry, critical thinking and problem-solving. Conducted online during April and May 2026, the Olympiad drew participation from students representing 17 states and multiple education boards, including CBSE, ICSE, IB and various State Boards.
Unlike conventional Olympiads that often focus on subject-specific excellence, the National Curiosity Olympiad challenged participants with 100 questions built around real-world situations and contemporary issues. Students were evaluated on competencies such as systems thinking, interdisciplinary reasoning, creativity, awareness, critical thinking and the ability to make meaningful connections across diverse domains.
The initiative reflects a growing global shift in educational thinking. As AI tools become increasingly capable of generating information and solving routine tasks, educators are placing greater emphasis on distinctly human capabilities like asking better questions, adapting to new situations and thinking independently.
The response to the Olympiad suggests that students, parents and educators are increasingly receptive to assessments that extend beyond traditional academic performance. Participants came from diverse educational backgrounds, indicating a growing appetite for learning frameworks that recognise skills often overlooked in standard examinations.
For the university, however, the initiative is intended to be more than a competition.
The top 30 performers have been invited to participate in the Builder's BootCamp Summer School 2026, an immersive programme designed to nurture leadership, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking among young learners. State toppers have also been recognised with Gold Medals.
More significantly, insights generated through the Olympiad will contribute to an Annual Curiosity Report, which the university plans to publish as a resource for educators, researchers and policymakers. The report aims to offer a deeper understanding of how young Indians learn, think and respond to emerging challenges, data that could help inform future educational practices.
The initiative aligns closely with Rishihood University's philosophy of nurturing "builders". Individuals who combine knowledge with creativity, purpose and the ability to solve real-world problems.
As conversations around educational reform continue under the National Education Policy and as schools grapple with preparing students for an AI-driven future, initiatives such as the National Curiosity Olympiad raise an important question: Should schools continue rewarding only the right answers, or should they also recognise the quality of the questions students ask?
By placing curiosity at the centre of assessment, the Olympiad attempts to shift the conversation from information acquisition to intellectual exploration. Rather than treating curiosity as an innate trait, it positions it as a measurable and cultivable life skill, one that can shape innovation, leadership and lifelong learning.
With the National Curiosity Olympiad set to become an annual flagship initiative, Rishihood University hopes to build a nationwide movement around curiosity-driven education, encouraging schools, educators and policymakers to rethink how student potential is identified, nurtured and celebrated in the years ahead.
