With Rs 835 crore, Ranbir Kapoor’s 'Ramayana' becomes the costliest Indian film

Keeping fans on their toes, the much-anticipated Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana' has been creating buzz ever since its announcement. After reports of Ranbir Kapoor’s whopping fee amount made headlines, it is now being reported that the film itself is a costly project with its budget at a mammoth figure of USD 100 Million which is around Rs 835 crore, that too just for the first part, given that the magnum opus is billed to be a trilogy.  According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, “Ramayana is not just a film but an emotion and the makers are leaving no stone unturned to make it a global spectacle. Producer Namit Malhotra plans to expand this further as the franchise grows. The idea is to take the audience on a visual treat with Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram. The budget of Ramayana is close to Rs 835 crores. The film requires 600 days of post-production work, which in itself speaks volumes about the investment required to create some of the most original visuals on the spectacle. The idea is to take Indian Cinema at a global level.” Last month, pictures of Ranbir as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita leaked as they shot a sequence in Film City, Goregaon. The internet had a field day dissecting the actors’ looks in the mythological drama. To avoid a similar situation in the future, we hear Tiwari has sprung into action and made changes to the schedule. Considering Ramayana is one of the most anticipated films, a premature reveal affects its novelty. Understanding this, the filmmaker is said to have rejigged the schedule to prioritise indoor shoots. A source from the set informed mid-day.com, “Going forward, Nitesh sir has decided to focus on the indoor shoots, thus minimising chances of another leak. The outdoor shoots will happen at night for the next few weeks. Also, additional private security has been hired to safeguard the set from paparazzi or fans lurking around for pictures.”  Right when the first part of the trilogy rolled, the makers had exercised a no-phone policy on the set. “That rule is non-negotiable. The unit will shoot continuously till the rains hit as Nitesh sir wants to complete a chunk by June. The makers are planning to shoot an elaborate portion later this week, which could become the announcement sequence. It is expected to be unveiled in June,” added the source. 'Ramayana' also stars Yash and Ravan, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, and Arun Govil as King Dasharatha.

Manoj Bajpayee and Sushant Singh Rajput

Manoj Bajpayee remembers late Sushant: ‘He was troubled by blind articles’

For an outsider to come to the industry and make his or her name is not an easy task, but Manoj Bajpayee is an inspiration for many. The actor has made his name with his hard work and versatility. He has always been open about the struggles outsiders face and about his late friend Sushant Singh Rajput. In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, the actor opened up about how Sushant was really affected by blind articles people used to write about him. Bajpayee shared, “Sushant was very vulnerable when it came to blind articles. He was a very good human being, and it is only a good person who can get affected by these things. He would often come to me and ask how to deal with these things. I used to tell him not to take these things seriously because I have gone through such situations before, and I am still bearing the brunt of such articles against me.” Manoj Bajpayee further shared that Sushant was a very sensitive and intelligent person. He said, “I told him to handle people whose films are working, who are in power. I would handle such people in a different way. I would tell my friends to convey to them that I would come and beat them up. What’s important is that the message is conveyed. Sushant used to laugh and would say, ‘Sir aap he kar sakte ho, mein nahi kar sakta ye (Sir only you can do it, I can’t). But he was troubled by blind articles. He was a very sensitive and intelligent person.” Sushant Singh Rajput's Case: Sushant Singh Rajput's unfortunate demise occurred on June 14, 2020. The following year saw reports of his sea-facing Mumbai residence being offered for rent, commanding a monthly fee of ₹4.5 lakh for the duplex property. The case surrounding Sushant's passing was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). However, despite the passage of three years, the CBI's investigation has yet to reach a definitive conclusion regarding the circumstances of his death. Manoj Bajpayee’s work front The ace actor has started filming for her much-loved series ‘Family Man 3’. The actor will next be seen in ‘Bhaiyaji’

The Cannes Film Festival will kick off its 77th edition on May 14 and run through May 24. With an entry in almost every major section, the festival commences with French musician-filmmaker Quentin Dupieux's "Le Deuxieme Acte" (The Second Act). India will have plenty of action during the 12-day event. Never before in history have Cannes and its sidebars found space for eight Indian, or India-themed, films. As many as six of these will be in contention for awards. So, when the festival winds down on May 24 and 25, the media contingent from the world's largest film-producing nation might have plenty to write about. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of movies can be." "Being in a place of vulnerability, in a dark theater filled with strangers, watching a brand-new film is my favorite place to be. I am stunned and thrilled and humbled to be serving as the president of the Cannes Film Festival Jury. I cannot wait to see what journeys are in store for all of us." Indians who have been on the Cannes jury

From Mrinal Sen, Aishwarya to Deepika, Indians who have been on the Cannes jury

We are now back at the yearly ritual of celebrating films on the shores of the French Riviera as we are just a couple of days away from the commencement of the Cannes Film Festival 2024. A festival that is a mecca for filmmakers, actors, producers, and everyone involved with the medium that sprinkles magic on the 70 mm screen. Every year the world is focused on what is happening in Cannes in those 10 days. The festival this year is from May 14 to May 25 and will have the who's who of the film fraternity from across the world mark their attendance. But what is more prestigious is the jury that judges the movies at the festival. Deepika Padukone made a massive buzz last year when she was on the jury for the festival and the country was suddenly made aware of what a high responsibility that is. Over the years, Indians have always had a mark at the festival but with social media, it is now quite visible to the world. So now as we inch closer to the opening day of the festival, let's look at all the Indians who have been on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival over the years. Deepika Padukone (2023) Deepika Padukone made history last year as she represented India at the Cannes Film Festival as the jury. The moment she walked on the red carpet in a Sabyasachi saree on the opening night, it became the highlight of the night and the world was glued. The Piku actor, in her interviews later, spoke about the responsibility and how she was honoured to be on the panel with the prestigious folks from the world of films. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (2003) Aishwarya walked so Deepika could fly. This is technically where it all began. After making her Cannes debut in 2002 alongside Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shah Rukh Khan for Devadas which won many awards, Rai was on the jury exactly the next year. This was the first time an Indian actor was on the Cannes Jury ever. Aishwarya has walked the Cannes Film Festival red carpet the most number of times for any Indian. Mrinal Sen (1982) Talking of first, let's celebrate the first Indian to have ever made it to the Cannes Film Festival jury. Filmmaker Mrinal Sen was on the prestigious jury in the year 1982 when his movie Kharij won the Jury Prize. The filmmaker has had a glorious Cannes history ever since with many of his movies making it to the festival. Mira Nair (1990) Mira Nair has certainly made India proud throughout her career, and the filmmaker has also been on the jury for the Cannes Film Festival in the year 1990. For the unversed, her film Salaam Bombay is the winner of the Audience Award at the festival and was also nominated in the Festival's Golden Camera Category for Best Feature Film. Arundhati Roy (2000) Arundhati Roy has always been a silent winner who has achieved massive milestones in life. Already the Booker Prize title holder, she was also on the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in the year 2000. Sharmila Tagore (2009) You can call the legendary Sharmila Tagore a Cannes Veteran because she has gone to the festival with a Satyajit Ray film. Yes, Devi was at the festival in 1962 and it was an honour for the country. In 2009, however, Tagore was invited to the jury and it was indeed an iconic moment. Nandita Das (2005) Nandita Das has always been a distinct voice amongst the filmmakers of her time. In 2005, the Mamto filmmaker was on the Cannes Film Festival jury and did get a global platform. She was invited back in 2013 to be on the panel for Cinefondation, a Cannes Foundation that empowers the next generation of filmmakers and was also on the jury for Short Films. Shekhar Kapur (2010) Shekhar Kapur is a living icon for Indian cinema and there can never be another like him. The filmmaker who has Golden Globes, BAFTA and more nominations in his kitty was on the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2010. The filmmaker is known for his movies like Mr. India, Bandit Queen and more." Vidya Balan (2013) Vidya Balan may not have had a film at the festival, but her performances and calibre have landed her the opportunity to be on the Cannes Film Festival jury exactly a decade before Deepika Padukone. In 2013, Balan walked the red carpet in a beautiful saree and was in the jury at the Festival.

Madhoo: Feel like an actor on film sets, not heroine

Actor Madhoo says she has moved on from the age-old thought process of being a heroine on film sets and embraced her role as a collaborator in the process of filmmaking. Known for hit 1990s films such as "Roja", "Phool Aur Kaante", "Yodha" and "Gentleman", the actor recently starred in the ZEE5 series "Fireflies: Parth Aur Jugnu" and "Sweet Kaaram Coffee", a Prime Video show. This is an amazing time to be an actor, said Madhoo, who will next be seen in psychological thriller film "Kartam Bhugtam". "Back in the day, I was a part of a culture where it was like 'I'm the hero, I'm the heroine'. But now, it doesn't feel like that... "I have moved on from that thought process and that's something the (OTT) content has done for me. It feels like I'm an actor on the movie set... You just feel that we are all collaborative and making one story..." she told PTI. The 55-year-old actor said, unlike the '90s, she no longer cares about being typecast in a certain role as she believes it's difficult to be stereotyped in the era of content boom. "I used to think I would be typecast. But now I don't care because there is so much content. So, how many times will you cast me as a mother or grandmother of one type? Back in the day, when actors played the role of a mother, it used to be a (big deal) thing. "Today, it's not about the length of the character, but its importance in a story. Those changes have definitely happened. That's why I'm happy to be (playing the role of) a mother," she added. Madhoo said she has played so many mother roles in the South in the last few years, including films such as "Shaakuntalam" and "Premadesam", that she has become the go-to actor to play the character of "young mother". "There was an 'angry young man' tag for Amit (Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s) ji. I have a tag in the South. They come and say, 'Amma, it's a mother role, but a young mother'. I am a young mother," she said. Directed by Soham P Shah, "Kartam Bhugtam" also stars Shreyas Talpade, Vijay Raaz, and Aksha Pardasany. It will hit the screens on May 17. Suhana Khan, Ananya Panday and Juhi Chawla celebrates KKR win

Suhana, Juhi & Ananya jump in excitement as KKR qualifies for IPL play-offs

Saturday night was full of drama and excitement for KKR fans and team owners Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, and Juhi Chawla. The IPL is keeping everyone on the edge of their seats, but one team that has been playing like bosses is Kolkata Knight Riders. And on Saturday, KKR won one of the most intense matches. On Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders took on the Mumbai Indians. The match was extremely important for Shah Rukh Khan's team as winning it would make them the first ones to qualify for the 2024 playoffs. But as important as the match was, the drama was also high. First, the match was delayed by rain, and then the overs were reduced to 16. But these hurdles couldn't stop the Knight Riders, who finally managed to win the match and became the first team to enter the playoffs. Suhana Khan has been attending most of the KKR matches, and this time she was present at the stadium with Juhi Chawla and Ananya Panday. As soon as it was confirmed, the three jumped in excitement. The video of them celebrating their victory has been going viral on the internet. While sharing this 'happy moment' on social media, a user wrote, "Kudos @KKRiders @iamsrk for a perfect end to the regular season. Once again, you had us all on the edge of our seats. Suhana couldn't catch her breath, Juhi couldn't bear to watch, and in the end, a finale worthy of a Bollywood script." Aditya Chopra and Arjun Kapoor

Have you heard? End of a long association

After over 12 years since his launch by YRF with Ishaqzaade (2012), Arjun Kapoor has parted ways with the studio’s talent management division. Stating that the two parties ended their association on an amicable note, a source explained, “Arjun wanted to explore newer avenues. The studio boss, Aditya Chopra understood his predicament. They have high regard for each other and will work together when a suitable project comes up.” Incidentally, Arjun marked his 12-year journey as an actor on Saturday with a video paying tribute to his maiden movie. Besides launching the actor, the studio’s talent division managed his movies, endorsements and PR. He has reportedly signed Matrix, co-founded by Reshma Shetty, to manage his work henceforth.  Borrowing inspiration Janhvi Kapoor did a Q-&-A session on social media yesterday, and a follower asked her if she was “copying Zendaya”. The Mr & Mrs Mahi actor conceded, “Yes, I think I’m very heavily inspired by what she did for her Challengers movie promotions. I feel as actors, we’re all encouraged to dress similar to your characters when you’re promoting a film.” Janhvi, who recently sported an outfit that took inspiration from her sports drama and incorporated tiny cricket balls in the design, added, “When I saw her dress in accordance to the theme of the film, I realised that as actors there is a good amount of attention put on how we look and how we dress. If I can use that to bring attention back to my film, then why not? So yes, definitely inspired by that and trying to follow her footsteps.”  Who will be the Boss?  On the one hand, celebrity contestants are being finalised for Big Boss OTT 3, and on the other hand, buzz is that Salman Khan might not return as the host. Reason: the superstar, who recently began filming Sikandar with director AR Murugadoss’ Sikandar, is suddenly facing date issues. Even as efforts are being made to adjust as per Salman’s schedule, other celebrities like Sanjay Dutt, Karan Johar and even Anil Kapoor have apparently been approached to host the digital version of the reality show. Sources claim that KJo is preoccupied with prior commitments and hence, is yet to sit down with the show producers. Anil’s meeting is also said to be pending, while Sanju is likely to meet them in the coming days.  Courting controversy Over two years ago, Kareena Kapoor Khan launched her book on pregnancy. Now, she has been issued a notice by the Madhya Pradesh High Court after advocate Christopher Anthony filed a petition expressing his angst over the use of the word ‘Bible’ in the title, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Pregnancy Bible. He issued a statement, saying, “Bible is the holy book of Christianity all over the world and it is wrong to compare Kareena Kapoor Khan’s pregnancy with the Bible.” Justice Gurpal Singh Ahluwalia has summoned Bebo to provide an explanation for her decision to incorporate ‘Bible’ in the title, and also served a notice to the sellers.  Stay alert Anup Soni is the latest celebrity whose deep fake videos are being used to promote betting and some Telegram group. Alerting everyone about the fraud, the actor  says, “We all have to be alert about how things can be manipulated, because the way the voice has been used, it sounds like it is really me talking. The clips have been sourced from the Crime Patrol series. I’d like to warn everyone out there to beware of such fraudulent videos.”  Of publicity stunts A video of Vikrant Massey in a heated argument with a cab driver went viral recently. In the episode that has been shot by the cabbie, the 12th Fail actor can be seen asking, “I was abusing? Why are you using the camera? Are you threatening me? I’m only asking logical questions. How did the fare increase suddenly? This won’t do.” Not to be taken in by the content of the video, netizens were sceptical that it was another ad campaign. One user commented, “Script achhi hai,” while another observed, “Yeah, this seems like some publicity gimmick for his upcoming series/film. And where did he get violent? That’s not visible.” Yet another social media subscriber wrote, “One minute’s silence for those who think it’s real.”  A dramatic wrap-up Vicky Kaushal has wrapped up the shoot of his historical drama, Chhaava. He plays Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in director Laxman Utekar’s biopic on the Maratha warrior king. Sharing a picture from the location on social media, Vicky wrote, “The incredibly passionate and dramatic journey of filming Chhaava couldn’t have ended without some drama. The rain gods really put up a show today, immediately after we rolled our final shot.” Admitting that there is so much he wishes to say, and so little he is able to convey about his journey right now, the actor added, “Maybe in a few days when it all sinks in. All I can say now with a heart full of gratitude, love and contentment is that it’s a wrap!” The period action drama is slated to arrive in theatres on December 6 this year.

Rabindranath Tagore and Gulzar

A conversation between poets

Musician duo Sourendra-Soumyajit has employed technology to bring veteran lyricist Gulzar before the revered late poet Rabindranath Tagore to answer questions raised by the latter. Aimed at showcasing a conversation between the two legends, the video shows Gulzar respond to Tagore, who, a century ago, was eager to know if a poet was reading his work. Sourendra-Soumyajit reveal that it was Gulzar who invited them to create something together. “Rabindranath’s 100-year old poem was penned keeping an unknown and imaginary poet in mind; one who is reading his work after a century. This was [evidently] an artistic urge to understand his relevance after 100 years. We decided that Gurudev should find the answer to this question through Gulzar saab, who has recited this poem himself.” This video uses AI to recreate Tagore’s voice to add meaning to this conversation. Gulzar shares, “Teachers often give [pupils] homework, and probably Gurudev gave some of it to Sourendro and Soumyojit. They simply passed it on to me. There’s a poem written by Gurudev. [It appears that] he knew he would grow older, and so would his creations. [He knew that] his creations would live beyond his death. In one of his poems, he asks which poet continues to read his work after 100 years. He describes his times, and asks questions about what occurs after 100 years. Once, Sourendra-Soumyajit asked me if I would like to respond to Gurudev. I don’t know if I have the courage to respond to him, but I can let Gurudev know about the time we are passing through; the things we have, and those that we lost.”
