Hailing from Moga, Punjab, Sonu Sood was born on July 30, 1973. His father Shakti Sagar Sood ran a garment shop and his mother Saroj Sood was a teacher. He also has a sister Monika who is a scientist by profession.
Before entering films, Sonu completed his degree in Electronics Engineering from Yeshwantrao Chavan College in Nagpur. Along with studies, Sonu started participating in fashion shows. Upon gaining popularity, friends suggested that he should try acting as well. Following his friends' advice, he came to the city of dreams, Mumbai, in 1996.
Sonu Sood's initial Mumbai journey began with a Rs. 400 bribe to enter Film City during the 'Raja Hindustani' shooting, hoping to be discovered. Arriving in Mumbai with just Rs. 5,500, Sonu Sood's savings depleted within a week. Refusing family help, he shared a cramped room with six others.
After facing rejection in Mumbai for several months, Sonu reached Hyderabad. Sonu got the opportunity to debut with Tamil films Kallazhagar and Nanjinile in 1999.
Sonu’s foray into Bollywood came with the film Shaheed-E-Azam in 2002. He played the role of Bhagat Singh in the film. He then went on to star in films like Yuva, Jodhaa Akbar, Dabangg and many others.
In 1996, Sonu tied the knot with Sonali Shirdhar, who hails from Andhra Pradesh. The duo fell in love when Sonu was pursuing engineering at the same college as Sonali. The couple have 2 sons - Ishant and Ayaan.
Due to his physical resemblance, the actor’s looks are compared to megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The conversation began after the veteran star shared a pic from the Reshma Aur Shera look test.
Talking about his interests apart from acting, Sonu is a fitness freak and his social media glimpses are proof of it. He believes in leading a disciplined life. Apart from this, he is also an avid animal lover. Be it speaking to stray dogs or catching a snake with bare hands, the actor has time and again shown his affection.
The actor is also a prolific guitar player and he shared some videos during the pandemic. To top it all, he was able to enact his talent in Rajshri Productions’ movie Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi.
We definitely can’t celebrate the star’s birthday without acknowledging his social work, especially during the pandemic. He also arranged buses, trains, and flight services for the migrant workers who were going to their hometowns on foot during the lockdown. Not only this, but he also arranged food for the poor people who were left with no food during the lockdown. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recognized him with the SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award for the initiative he and his team took.
After the pandemic, the Sonu Sood Charity Foundation provided medical help to the underprivileged. He also organised free medical camps across the country to treat and offer medical aid to over 50,000 needy people. The actor also introduced the Pravasi Rojgaar app that enabled the workers to find suitable jobs.
He also started a special scholarship programme for students pursuing higher education. Health workers were facing several challenges during the COVID-19 lockdown. During that time Sonu Sood opened the doors of his Juhu hotel to accommodate the medical warriors who treated patients at the place. His scheme Shakti Annadanam provided food to 45000 people daily during pandemic. He is also an author and wrote a book titled I Am No Messiah.
The residents of a village in Telangana have constructed a temple dedicated to the actor for helping migrant workers during the pandemic.
In a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, Sonu Sood revealed that he was offered the Chief Minister’s position. However, he refused to take up the role as he feared losing the freedom to help people.
