The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai for July 9, anticipating very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall on Monday morning, causing significant disruptions across the city.
According to IMD Director Sunil Kamble, approximately 270 mm of rainfall was recorded between 2 am and 6 am. This intense downpour has led to traffic jams and widespread waterlogging.
Ram Karan Yadav, General Manager of Central Railway, reported heavy rains since Sunday night, with over 300 mm of rain in just six hours. Waterlogging has particularly impacted the main line around Kurla and Bhandup, as well as the Harbour Line from Wadala to Mankhurd, leading to service disruptions and cancellations.
Yadav advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to the heavy rains. Several trains have been cancelled or diverted to manage the situation.
The heavy rainfall has also affected flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Delays and cancellations have occurred as the airport management struggles to maintain normal operations amidst the severe weather.
Schools in Mumbai were shut down, and exams scheduled for the day were cancelled due to the heavy rains.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that Colaba received 83.8 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz recorded 267.9 mm in the last 24 hours. Overall, Mumbai has received 2547 mm of rainfall, which is 27 per cent of the average annual rain during this period.
Heavy rains led to waterlogging in various low-lying areas of Mumbai, including Worli, Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King's Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station. This waterlogging has caused significant disruptions to daily life and transportation.
The BMC stated that their entire machinery is actively working in the field to manage the situation. They have requested residents not to believe in rumours and to stay informed through official channels. The BMC's efforts are focused on mitigating the impact of the heavy rainfall.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with an emphasis on public safety and maintaining essential services. The IMD's alerts and the responsive measures by the BMC and other agencies aim to ensure that Mumbai can navigate through this period of severe weather with minimal harm.
