Over the past week, the city’s AQI has consistently remained above 100, indicating a gradual deterioration in air quality
The health advisory issued on Centre's SAMEER app notes that the current air quality in the city can cause breathing discomfort, particularly for individuals with pre-existing lung conditions, asthma, and heart diseases
Breaking down the air quality by locality, Colaba in South Mumbai recorded an AQI of 55 ('satisfactory'). While the air in this area is not harmful to the general population, sensitive individuals may experience minor breathing discomfort
Meanwhile, the western suburb of Borivali recorded a higher AQI of 154 ('moderate') which may pose health risks to people suffering from asthma or other respiratory illnesses
The air quality in Deonar in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs came under 'poor' category, as the AQI was 230 in the area. Prolonged exposure to such pollution levels can cause breathing difficulties even for healthy individuals and is particularly hazardous for vulnerable groups
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted Mumbai’s maximum temperature to be around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to hover around 22 degrees Celsius
The combination of moderate to poor air quality and the prevailing haze underscores the importance of limiting outdoor exposure for sensitive individuals, using masks if necessary, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities
