Opposition MPs protest against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, during the Monsoon session of Parliament Pic/ PTI
The protest was led by Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, where INDIA bloc MPs shouted slogans such as "vote chor, gaddi chhor" and "vote chori band karo"
Demonstrators also carried a large banner that read "vote chori" and displayed posters with demands to "stop SIR"
Leaders from Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Left parties, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Samajwadi Party gathered outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament holding posters and banners
Amid speculation that the opposition might bring an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Congress leader Naseer Hussain told reporters that every democratic method would be used to ensure the Chief Election Commissioner remains "unbiased"
The opposition has been continuously protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging that the EC’s move is designed to "disenfranchise voters" in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections later this year
They have consistently demanded that the matter be taken up for discussion in both Houses of Parliament
Other than discussions on Operation Sindoor in both Houses, Parliament has seen very little business since the Monsoon session began on July 21, with repeated adjournments largely over the SIR issue
He said, "The Election Commission asks for an affidavit from me. But when Anurag Thakur says the same thing that I am saying, it does not ask for an affidavit from him"
