People had climbed to rooftops and also stood on either side of the road leading to the officer’s residence. The mortal remains were brought home in a coffin wrapped in the national flag late on the night of February 18, 2019

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal's mother Saroj, a cardiac patient, his wife Nikita Kaul, whom he had married less than a year ago, and a host of relatives and friends were crying inconsolably as his coffin was kept for people to pay their last respects before being taken to Haridwar for the last rites

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal sustained gunshot wounds in his neck and abdomen during the encounter with Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in the Pinglan area of Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. He along wth three other martyr's were provided immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, but succumbed to their injuries
