Early Wednesday morning, Washington DC woke up to a snow-blanketed White House, as temperatures plunged across the region. Forecasters say the cold spell is likely to persist for several days and could reach its peak by Friday.
Weather models also point to the possibility of fresh snowfall over the weekend. For days, meteorologists have been tracking the potential formation of a storm system along the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic coast, which could intensify depending on atmospheric conditions.
Current projections suggest the system may pass south and east of the Washington metropolitan area, increasing the chances of snowfall along the Eastern Shore. However, experts caution that even slight shifts in the larger weather pattern could alter the storm’s trajectory and bring snow closer to the capital.
Temperatures dropped sharply on Wednesday, with Washington DC recording lows near 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Several nearby regions experienced even harsher conditions, with readings falling into the single digits and, in some pockets, dipping below zero.
Earlier this month, a powerful winter storm carved a broad path of snow from the US Southwest to New England, triggering hazardous travel conditions, downed power lines and widespread school closures, according to NASA, citing media reports.
