'Baankey Ki Crazy Baraat' - Movie Review

'Baankey Ki Crazy Baraat'
U/A; Comedy
Director: Aijaz Khan
Cast: Satyajeet Dubey, Tia Bajpai, Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav, Rakesh Bedi
Stars:

With most comedies cashing in on double entendres, Baankey Ki Crazy Baraat avoids falling into the risqué trap to raise a few laughs. Except for a forced item number by Hazel Keech (remember her from the 2011 Salman Khan-starrer Bodyguard?), it’s pretty wholesome fare. Only if it could have managed to be chuckle-worthy. With names like Sanjay Mishra, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and Rakesh Bedi in the cast — all seasoned players of comic capers — half the battle was won. All that was needed was some pithy lines to add the punch and keep the laughter flowing. In the second half though, there are some of those moments, but they only look like a last-ditch bid to make the audience smile at least.

As the title suggests, it has a big fat Indian wedding as its backdrop peppered with some oddball characters. Baankey (Rajpal) is keen to have a PYT for a wife, but his stars won’t allow him to do so. In a bid to get him hitched, by hook or by crook, his folks find a proxy groom (Satyajeet Dubey) to wed the girl (Tia Bajpai) Baankey fancies. This double trouble and the confusion it causes, sadly, does not result in tongue-in-cheek humour as the plot meanders instead of concentrating on the funny lines.

Sanjay, Vijay and Rakesh do what they have done countless times in earlier films. In fact, Sanjay and Vijay can now sleepwalk through such roles. Tia’s job is to look pretty and that’s all that she does while Satyajeet tries to be earnest.

On the whole, the experience of watching Baankey Ki Crazy Baraat is like attending a lavish wedding feast, but ending up with indigestion.
