Against a balanced backdrop in 2013, 2014 in B-Town seems to be full of promise. Here’s our pick of some of the Bollywood films in 2014 that could be exciting...

Bollywood films to watch out for in 2014

2013, by no means, was a disappointment. There were several cinematic instances where Hindi films experimented and pulled off ably. On the downside, there was usual masala fare that earned more critical negativity than moolah at the box-office. Against such a balanced backdrop, 2014 seems full of promise. HitList points out some of the movies worth waiting...


'Jai Ho'

Salman Khan after a year’s gap, and again with a remake of Telugu film, Stallin, which apparently was inspired from an English film, Pay It Forward. Directed by his younger brother Sohail Khan, Salman has launched new face Daisy Shah. She used to be a dancer and has danced in the background of some of Khan’s films. The film is scheduled to release on January 24.


'Pee Kay'

Well, it’s Rajkumar Hirani returning with Aamir Khan. So do we have to say more? The talented duo comes together for a political satire. Though not much is known about the film some leaked pictures (left) promise something exciting. Aamir is pairing up with Anushka Sharma for the first time in this one. The Kai Po Che actor Sushant Singh and Sanjay Dutt are also part of the film. The film releases on June 6.


'Happy New Year'

Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan come together after seven years to make a film. Of course, there is Deepika Padukone who has given two consecutive hits with the actor and they expect a hat-trick. The film has an ensemble cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Jackie Shroff. Two studios are vying to get the film, and Khan is wanting a Diwali release.

Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming Happy New Year, which is directed by Farah Khan, will release during Diwali this year.

'Bombay Velvet'

Anurag Kashyap’s most looked forward to commercial film with a huge budget, this has been the director’s most ambitious project till date. Also this would the first time that audiences will get to see Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma coming together. The film is based on historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables. Most portions of the film are shot in Sri Lanka and it set in the mid 60s. The film is being produced by Phantom Films and Fox Star studios.

'Mary Kom'

Biopics often generate curiosity and Mary Kom is one of the few persons who is still actively playing the boxing game. Priyanka Chopra who plays her role in the film went under extensive training to play Mary. The second schedule of the film starts in Manali in the month of February.

'Phantom'

This is Kabir Khan first film outside YRF banner. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala the film stars Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif. Said to be based on counter terrorism and shot in Beirut and other foreign location, this film looks thrilling enough. Saif is said to have learnt Kurdish language for this film.

'Shaadi Ke Side Effects'

A joint venture between Balaji Motion Pictures and Pritish Nandy Communications, this one seems like fun. The film is directed by Saket Chaudhary and stars Farhan Akhtar, Vidya Balan, Vir Das and Ram Kapoor. The film releases on February 28.

'Bang Bang'

Said to be the official remake of the Hollywood flick Knight And Day starring Tom Cruise, the film stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. It is directed by Siddharth Anand. Roshan Jr injured himself during one of the outdoors of the film. The shooting schedule had been cancelled twice — once due to Hrithik’s brain surgery as the doctors had advised him against shooting action scenes. The actor goes back on the sets from January 18 to shoot a song of the film.

'Gulab Gang'

This will be Madhuri Dixit’s second film this year. A supposedly strong feminist film, this one was earlier clashing with Dedh Ishqiya, but now the film is slated to release on Women Day. The film is directed by debutant director Soumik Sen and produced by Anubhav Sinha. What’s exciting is that Mads has done a lot of action and it also has Juhi Chawla in it.

'All is Well'

Vidhu Vinod Chopra was generous enough to lend the title to T -Series for Umesh Shukla’s film. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan, Asin Smriti Irani and Rishi Kapoor. Shukla’s last film OMG-Oh My God! makes us look forward to this one.

'Kochadaiyaan'

We need no more reason to be excited than the fact that this is Rajnikanth’s next film. And then ,it also has Deepika Padukone, she had almost quit Race 2 to shoot for this film. The film is being directed by Rajinikanth daughter Soundarya. Slated for release in mid-January.

'Dedh Ishqiya'

Those of you who have watched Abhishek Chaubey’s Ishqiya will know why it’s sequel Dedh Ishqiya is something to look forward to. And yes, it has Madhuri Dixit along with Naseeruddin Shah, Huma Qureshi and Arshad Warsi. Madhuri’s character is said to have shades of grey. The film, produced by Vishal Bhardwaj , releases on January 10.

'Gunday'

An ode to Yash Chopra’s 1979 action drama, Kaala Pathar. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor will be coming together for the first time. The film is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.

'Mardaani'

Rani Mukerji will be seen on screen after a long time. She teams up with YRF. The film will see the actress playing a cop and doing action scenes for the first time in her career. The release date is yet to be finalised.

'Heropanti'

Heropanti marks the debut of Jackie Shroff’s son Tiger Shroff. The film is a love story directed by Sabbir Khan, who earlier directed Kambakkht Ishq.

'Hasse Toh Phasse'
Hasse Toh Phasse
Said to be loosely based on Amrita Singh-Juhi Chawla starrer, Aaina the film stars Siddharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra and Adah Sharma. The film is directed by Vinil Mathew. It releases on February 7.

'Tere Bin Laden 2'

This sequel of the hit film is likely to depict the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden. The makers of the film had recreated Abbotabad to shoot somescenes for the film. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma

'Queen'

Kangna Ranaut plays a Plain Jane in the film. The film is a romantic drama directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by UTV and Phantom Films. The film has Rajkumar Rao playing the male lead. The film is slated for a February 28 release.

'Kick'
It will be Salman Khan’s second film of the year and is slated for an Eid release. The star plays a Robin Hood kind of role. It also marks the debut of producer Sajid Nadiadwala as director.

'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya'
A Dharma production the film is said to be a tribute to Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. The film is being directed by Shashank Khaitan and stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi'
Dibakar Banerjee and YRF come together to make a film on a detective series. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the title role.

'Jagga Jasoos '
Ranbir Kapoor turns producer with this film. Anurag Basu is directing the film. Ranbir and Katrina feature together in the film.

'Haider'
Shahid Kapoor and Vishal Bhardwaj come together for this adaptation of Hamlet. The film to be entirely shot in Kashmir also stars Shradha Kapoor

'Finding Fanny'
It is a film for which Deepika Padukone has taken a cut in her market price though the actress will share profit with the others. Directed by Homi Adjania the film also stars Dimple Kapadia Pankaj Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Anjali Patil and Boman Irani. The film has been shot in Goa. Ranveer Singh has a guest appearance in the film.

'Fan'
The next film Shah Rukh Khan starts after Happy New Year will be Maneesh Sharma’s film Fan. The film is a YRF production. Strangely the film has been written by another YRF director Habib Faisal. The heroine is yet to be finalized and some of the names that are floating around are Anushka Sharma and Parineeti Chopra (she is Maneesha Sharma favourite). The film releases on December 19.

'Kill Dill'
The Bunty Aur Babli director Shaad Ali returns to direction after four years. Ranveer Singh gets to work with Govinda who he has been idolising since his childhood. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar.

'Ragini MMS-2'
Ragini MMS-2 is a much awaited Balaji project, the film’s release has been postponed severa times, but finally will be releasing in 2014. Sunny Leone is something to watch out for in the film.

'Totat Siyappa'
Earlier titled Aman Ki Asha the film is a romanatic comedy. Directed by E Niwas and written by Neeraj Pandey the film stars Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam. The film is love story between a Pakistani boy and an Indian girl.

'Fitoor'
After Kai Po Che, director Abhishek Kapoor is one of the most sought after filmmaker in Bollywood. Aaashiqui 2 hero Aditya Roy Kapur plays the lead. The film will be shot in Kashmir.

'Highway'
This film, supposedly the longer version of Imtiaz Ali’s television series Rishtey, stars Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda. Imtiaz wanted Highway to be his first film The film has been shot in the northern region of the country including Kashmir.

In a parallel world...
Some smaller budget but equally interesting films are all set to hit the theatres. A few of the promising ones are...

'Miss Lovely'

Porn might be a no-no but a film capturing the story of a sibling-producers who are into sleazy sex-horror films sounds interesting. Oh, and did we mention Nawazuddin Siddiqui is playing one of the two brothers?

'Ugly'

Although the release of Anurag Kashyap’s next seems affected by the ongoing court case against anti-smoking disclaimers, it goes without saying that the upcoming psychological thriller-drama is worth the wait.

'NH 10'
This might be Anushka Sharma’s debut production venture but what’s interesting about is the delay that has taken place in terms of casting. So when the film finally churns out, director Navdeep Singh’s mettle will be tested.

'City Lights'
After the acclaimed Shahid, the focus will be on Hansal Mehta’s immediate next. An official adaptation of Britain's Oscar entry Metro Manila, City Lights stars the director’s blue-eyed boy Raj Kumar in the lead role.

'Hawaa Hawaai'

Stanley Ka Dabba was Amole Gupte’s last directorial venture. His second film as a writer-director has his son Partho in the lead role along with Mere Dad Ki Maruti star Saqib Saleem. The film revolves around skateboarding.

'Qissa'

Starring Irrfan Khan and Tillotama Shome, this period drama deals with Partition. Having garnered several awards across the film circuit, this Anup Singh-directed film subtly sheds light on gender issues.

'Titli'
Produced by Dibakar Banerjee, it’s a dark family drama about a man who cannot escape his roots. The film has Ranvir Shorey, Amit Sial and Lalit Behl in the leading roles

'Tumbad'
After creating a storm with Ship of Theseus, Anand Gandhi’s next venture is a period fantasy. Interestingly, he isn’t directing this one and passed the baton to another newcomer, Rahi Barve. Their effort is expected to release in 2014.
