A 25-year-old man was caught red-handed on Saturday while trying to make off with a four-year-old boy he had abducted. Some alert policemen posted at the naka intercepted him at the nick of time. The accused has been identified as Anil Babarao Thorat (25), a resident of Yavatmal, Amravati. The incident took place on Saturday evening when the boy’s father Deepesh Moreshwar Naik, a resident of Macchimar Nagar in Cuffe Parade, had gone with his four-year-old son Tejas to the Indian Bank at Captain Prakash Pethe Marg, Cuffe Parade.

“Naik had asked his son Tejas to stand at the gate while he went to the bank. When he returned, he saw that his son was missing. Meanwhile, some police constables sitting on the chowk intercepted Thorat, seeing the shabbily dressed man rushing off with a boy,” said a police officer from Cuffe Parade police station.

When the police questioned Thorat, he could not produce satisfactory answers, and finally admitted that he had stolen the boy from the bank premises. The police immediately arrested Thorat and booked him under Section 363 of the IPC on charges of kidnapping. The police will also collect DNA samples from the accused to see if he was involved in the recent murders of three minor girls in the Cuffe Parade area.

“Thorat’s face matches that on the sketch given to us in the three cases and we hope we can soon solve the three murder cases,” said a police officer from Cuffe Parade police station.
