State government on Saturday officially announced Padsalgikar's appointment as new CP Mumbai on superannuation of present CP Ahmad Javed, who is serving his last day on Saturday as city police chief with his impending retirement on January 31.

Maharashtra-Cadre 1982-batch IPS officer, Padsalgikar is the 40th police commissioner of Mumbai.

Additional Chief secretary (home) KP Bakshi while confirming Padsalgikar's appointment said, "The post of Commissioner of Police, Mumbai stands downgraded to the rank of Additional Director General of Police."

Earlier the post was upgraded to the DG rank as to appoint DGP Ahmad Javed as new CP after transferring Additional DG Rakesh Maria to home guards last year.

According to source, Ahmad Javed, who was given a farewell on Saturday morning at Naigaon police ground by the city police force, likely to hand over the charge to new commissioner on Saturday evening.

While Javed relinquished charge on Saturday and was accorded a ceremonial send-off, Padsalgikar will assume office on Sunday at 12 noon.

State government was keen on appointing Padsalgikar as Mumbai CP at the time of transferring Rakesh Maria in September last year following Sheena Bora case controversy. But then Padsalgikar had then rejected the offer of appointment as police commissioner, as he was very keen on IB. But later the senior IB officer made up his mind and gave a green nod to the decision of bringing him back to the city, said a source.

Following Padsalgikar's rejection to the offer the government had upgraded the post of CP Mumbai and appointed Ahmad Javed as new CP in September 2015.

Ahmad Javed after retirement soon likely to take charge of his new responsibility as the Indian envoy in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has already cleared his appointment and the post is presently vacant.
