Yasutaro Koide, who lives in the central Japanese city of Nagoya, received the formal designation on Friday as family and city dignitaries applauded. Officials from the Guinness World Records visited Yasutaro Koide at a care facility near his home in Nagoya city in central Japan.

On the secret to his longevity, Koide said “The best thing is to not overdo.” Koide also advised to stay away from alcohol and smoking. Even at this age, he doesn’t need glasses to read the newspaper. Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura also presented him flowers and congratulated him on his longevity.

Koide was born on March 13, 1903 and worked as a tailor when he was younger. He became the world’s oldest man after the death of Sakari Momoi (also 112) of Tokyo, in July.
