Despite the fact that lavani, Maharashtra's traditional dance form, calls for an unusual skill to perform it deftly, it's actually proven to be a cakewalk for German actress Suzanne Bernert.
The blonde actress has not only mastered lavani, but has also done it with sheer elan in a Marathi political satire titled Gallit Gondhal Dillit Mujra that released on May 1 in 160 cinema halls across the state.
Speaking to Mid DAY, Bernert said, "I was always passionate about dancing but I hadn't done the lavani before. So, I was a bit startled initially.

But after the choreographer and my co-dancer explained the nuances of the dance to me, it was pretty easy. I was quite thrilled while the lavani number."
Explaining her role in Gallit Gondhal Dillit Mujra, Bernert said, "I play a girl called Rebecca who comes to Maharashtra to study Marathi folk art.
Here she meets a local politician and in a bid to help him, Rebecca ends up doing the lavani, which is also the climax of the film."
Apart from dancing, Bernert is also passionate about acting. "I always wanted to be an actress," she said.

Recalling her childhood, she said, "Initially, I used to work with my parents in puppet plays, dramas and ballet recitals and later, my parents didn't oppose my decision to join the Art and Drama University in Germany," said Bernert who speaks French, Italian, Spanish and even Hindi.
"Although I am quite busy these days, I intend to make time and learn Marathi," she said. Bernert is married to actor-director Atul Mishra and is presently working in a Hindi and an English film.
