Mumbai Crime: 21-year-old set on fire, cops suspect rape

A 21-year-old girl in Malwani died after an unknown person set her on fire in her home. The incident occurred on Thursday, and the girl passed away yesterday after succumbing to her burn injuries. Cops suspect that the girl was raped before she was set on fire by the alleged accused, whose identity has not been ascertained yet.

According to cops at the Malwani police station, the deceased came out of her house in flames on Thursday evening, shouting for help. One of her neighbours, a woman, opened the door and saw that the girl was on fire. She tried to douse the flames and later took the girl to the Shatabdi Hospital. In her statement to the police at the hospital, the girl said that a bearded man set her on fire.

While the cops were searching the girl’s home, they found a used condom in the dustbin. Because of the same they suspect that she could have been raped before being set on fire. They have also registered a case of rape in the matter.

Locals say, the girl is survived by her parents and three brothers. One works at a call centre, while another works at a mobile phone shop, and the youngest brother works as an air condition mechanic. At the time of the incident, she was alone at home since her brothers were away at work. Her parents had gone to their native place and were to return today morning.

Police sources have said that before the girl was burnt, at least four women were sitting at the entrance of the chawl. But, they claim that they didn’t see anyone entering the house. A case has been registered under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape), 354 (assault or criminal force) and 452 (house-trespass) against unknown persons.
