At a time when the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi campus boils over the case of a missing student Najeeb Ahmed, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has become the first university in the city to conduct an activity in solidarity.
A march was held by the students of Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle of the institute on its Powai campus on Monday evening. They waved placards with messages such as ‘stop hunting Muslims’, ‘bring back Najeeb’, ‘another instance of minority hunt campuses’ and ‘we demand fair investigation’. The members of the group have also expressed their disappointment over how the university administration preferred to remain mum.

When the student group approached the dean of Students’ Affair, to take permission for the march, the official had allegedly said that he would neither agree nor deny permission. While the march was held peacefully, members of the group have planned to approach the administration to devise a proper method of handling activities related to controversial issues on campus.
Requesting anonymity, one of the members of the group said, “Considering the controversial nature of the activity, the administration preferred to remain mum. But in the past, the same administration has given permission for activities such as a talk by Canadian writer Tariq Fatah, in which he gave an anti-Islam lecture on India and Pakistan.”
“The march was to show our solidarity towards the activities in JNU aimed at finding Najeeb. He is missing from the campus since October 15,” said Kranti Kumar, group coordinator.
