In an attempt to impress his friends, an 18-year-old Worli resident on Wednesday dived into the sea to show-off his swimming skills. But, the stunt proved to be fatal after the boy, identified as Yogesh Gawli, was pulled into the sea by heavy water currents and drowned. His friends' attempts to rescue him also went in vain.

The fire brigade fished out the teenager's body last night.

"Gawli had just returned from his uncle's Ambernath home to his residence in Worli after six months and planned to meet up with his friends at Worli Seaface," a friend of Gawli friends told the police.

An officer from Dadar police station said, "He told his friends he was a good swimmer and jumped into the sea, but struggled to swim back and later, drowned."

Gawli's friend Vinayak Pawar told mid-day, "I reached the spot a bit late where my friends (including Gawli) were clicking pictures and taking selfie's. We were a group of 10 friends -- eight boys and two girls -- and had decided to meet at Worli Koliwada.

Suddenly, Yogesh jumped into the sea at the time of a high tide. He said that he is a swimmer and he will come out. But, the choppy waters kept pulling him deeper into the sea, and he started to drown. We then got hold of a rope threw at him, but it didn't help. My friend, Ganesh Kamble, and I jumped into the water to rescue him, but we could not pull him out. In the meantime, the locals had informed the police and the fire brigade reached the spot, but could not locate his body until the sunset."

An officer at Dadar police said, "The search operation went on till 8pm. He was immediately rushed to Sion hospital, where he was declared dead. An Accidental death report has been registered."

Gawli's friends told the police that the teenager was a school dropout and his mother works as a domestic help. Gawli used to work in a company based in Tardeo after his father passed away last year. He was living in Ambernath with his uncle for the past six months. He had just returned to Worli and went to meet his friends who were residents of Siddharath Nagar and Jijamata Nagar in Worli.
