The chick flick genre is a tricky tightrope to walk. A chick flick is supposed to be a movie designed for women who can watch them either alone or with their besties and have a jolly good time. Ironically most chick flicks from Hollywood are actually insulting to women. 2012's 'Pitch Perfect' was a refreshingly good chick flick, filled with fun moments and a wonderful throwback to a beloved hit song of the 80's. Since it made a lot of money on a shoestring budget (precisely ten times its budget) a sequel was inevitable. Normally such sequels are basically cash grabs, but 'Pitch Perfect 2' is surprisingly fun.

The story takes place some time after the events of the previous movie. The Barden Bellas (Anna Kendrick and gang) are now kind of known faces, and they're invited to perform at Barack Obama's birthday. Unfortunately, and hilarious that ends with a wardrobe malfunction for Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) and they're all banned from performing in such events again. Their only hope of salvaging some respect is by winning the world championships.

The story is as cookie cutter as they come, and dance based movies have a story only as an excuse to belt out the dance numbers, this movie's story is an excuse to dish out jokes and epic song routines. Sure, most of the jokes are predictable and almost all the characters are stereotypical but it's difficult not to have fun with these amusingly mismatched characters clashing with each other. First time director Elizabeth Banks knows what made the first movie such a big hit and does well to stay safe and serve up more of the same, and adding some spice of her own to make sure it doesn't feel repetitive. The characters have a ton of fun in the movie, and so will the audience.

Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit makes a nice addition to the Bellas, whipping out previously unseen talent and also attractiveness. There's a fun love track included between Fat Amy and a guy named Bumper (Adam Devine) Where the film disappoints, however, is that it delivers the same old themes of friendship and winning, even though it attempts to so some self referential comedy in the beginning. 'Pitch Perfect 2' could surely have been a smarter film, but it's fun enough, and it's for everyone. And luckily it's not in 3D.
