A 23-year-old youth died after his two-wheeler hit a manhole cover in the wee hours of Wednesday. The accident happened near Teen Hatti chowk in Raut Baug area of Dhankawadi in Pune.

The police have identified the deceased as Shravan Choudhari, a resident of Ambegaon Pathar in Pune. Shravan's wife had delivered a baby daughter twenty days ago.

Speaking to mid-day, Senior Inspector S G Shinde in-charge of Sahakarnagar police station said, "The incident took place on Wednesday around 5 am. He was passing by the area and riding down a slope when his bike hit the manhole cover and he fell into the 10-ft deep manhole."

He added, "The injuries were such that he died on the spot. 20 days ago, Shravan's wife had delivered a baby daughter and he was rushing back home from hospital. The PMC officials have assured that they would take strict action against the culprit. Our investigations are also underway in the matter. At present we have registered a case of accidental death and have also learnt that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has ordered an inquiry and asked a report to be submitted in this regard within 24 hours."

A local resident Nitin Patil said, "The area is poorly lit and the open manhole cover led to the accident. Two or three minor accidents take place on the same patch of road on a daily basis. There is not street light in the area and we had complained to the PMC in the past but they remain mum on the issue."
