Thane: A 27-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and later ended his own life by jumping before a speeding train early today, police said.

The man identified as Atul Ramesh Tribhuvan and his wife Guddi (24), lived with their two children, a six-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter, in a slum in Azad Nagar in the city, police said. They had been married since 2008.

Atul, who worked as helper in a chemical factory, had shifted to Thane for his job around four months back, from their native place Shrirampur in Ahmednagar district, police said, adding, the motive behind the crime was not yet known.

"Around 6.30 am today, Tribhuvan took a sharp knife and slit Guddi's throat, when their two children were asleep. He then covered her face with a bed-sheet and left the knife beside her body. Atul then locked the door from outside and went to Thane railway station," Sushil Kadam, senior police inspector of Kapurbawdi police station said.

On reaching the railway station around 7.30 am, Atul went to the platform number six and jumped before a speeding train. The Railway police alerted Atul's colleagues, who in turn informed his relatives.

"The relatives who rushed home found the house locked from outside. After the door was broken open, they found Guddi was lying dead in a pool of blood, while the children were still asleep," Kadam said.
