The case

A 51-year-old Danish woman was robbed and raped by a group of men near the New Delhi railway station. The Danish woman, who came to India on January 1, had gone to visit a museum on Tuesday evening but lost her way to her hotel in Paharganj, a tourist hub in the heart of Delhi. Around 4 pm, a group of men lured her to an isolated spot where she was robbed of her iPad and cash and then raped by six men, one of who had a knife, police said. She was kept hostage for more than three hours, and somehow reached her hotel around 7 pm. A Delhi court on June 6 convicted five persons for gangraping, robbing and kidnapping her.

Here are other gruesome cases

The victim had died in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012. The case is also referred to as the Nirbhaya gang rape case, and has shocking similarities to the recent gang rape and murder in Kerala.

2013 Mumbai gang rape: On August 22, 2013, a photojournalist was allegedly gang raped by five men at around 8 pm near Shakti Mills in Mahalaxmi. The victim was on an assignment, doing a story on 'chawl' when the offence took place. The men tied up the victim's friend and raped the woman.

Esther Anuhya case: Esther Anuhya, a software engineer with Tata Consultance Services, went missing on January 5, 2014 after she arrived in Mumbai from Hyderabad where she celebrated Christmas with her family. On January 16 the remains of her body was found from the bushes near Tata Nagar Colony in Bhandup East. Post mortem reports revealed that she was sexually assaulted before being killed. In October 2015, the accused Chandrabhan Sanap was convicted for rape and murder of the techie

Shopian rape and murder case: Between May 29 and 30, 2009, two women, Nilofar Jan, 22, and her sister-in-law Asiya Jan, 17, were raped and murdered in south Kashmir's Shopian district and their bodies were found by the side of a local stream outside the town. Four police officers, including then district police chief, a deputy superintendent of police, an inspector and a sub-inspector, were suspended and later arrested by the government for negligence of duty and destruction of vital evidence in the case that triggered a public outrage across the Valley.

Geeta and Sanjay Chopra case: Back in New Delhi in 1978, siblings Geeta and Sanjay were kidnapped by Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa). They were abducted for ransom but after coming to know that their father was a naval officer, the duo killed the kids. Geeta was allegedly raped before being murdered. The abductors initially admitted to sexual assault charge, but later retracted the statement. The two kidnappers were convicted and sentenced to death. They were hanged on January 31, 1982.
