Officers of the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) have arrested a garment trader from Jammu and Kashmir and a taxi driver for carrying 21 kg of charas. The driver helped the main accused get the drugs to Mumbai. According to police, the trader has been identified as Haji Abdul Rahman Shaikh, 67, and the taxi driver as Irfaan Qureshi, 42.

On July 9, the ANC officers got information that charas was to be delivered to someone in Nagpada. After this, the police laid a trap and arrested Shaikh from a hotel in South Mumbai. The police recovered 15.66 kg of the drug from him and the remaining amount from the taxi driver. The entire consignment is valued at '83.68 lakh.

Sources from the ANC said Shaikh was arrested in 2010 with 39 kg of charas and was convicted for 10 years. However, he managed to secure bail in 2014. Since then he has been delivering drugs to people in Mumbai every three months. Every time he had to deliver a consignment, he would reach the city by train two days earlier. He usually sent the charas in one of the trucks that transported goods from J&K to Mumbai. Then he would hire a taxi and ask the driver to get the consignment into the city and deliver the drugs at different places for around '15,000 to '20,000.

Shivdeep Lande, deputy CP, said, "Both the accused were produced in court. They have been sent to police custody till June 17."
