'Y’all miss me?': Demi Lovato returns as Mitchie in Camp Rock 3 after nearly two decades

Talk about a nostalgia bomb! Demi Lovato is back at Camp Rock. The singer-actor makes a surprise appearance in Camp Rock 3, reprising her beloved role as Mitchie Torres nearly two decades after the original Disney musical introduced her to audiences.

Demi Lovato's Mitchie makes a comeback

Lovato, who also serves as an executive producer on the new film, returns to the franchise that made her a household name. Camp Rock 3 premieres on Disney Channel on Thursday at 8 pm ET/PT and will stream on Disney plus from the following day.

Demi Lovato also joined the Camp Rock 3 cast at the film's Los Angeles premiere, marking a nostalgic return to the franchise ahead of her surprise on-screen comeback as Mitchie Torres. Ahead of the premiere, Lovato shared a photo of herself in the film and wrote, "Y'all miss me? xoxo, Mitchie."

Lovato's comeback was kept under wraps, with the actor previously announced only as an executive producer. Her return also reunites her with the Jonas Brothers, who are back as Connect 3, Shane Gray (Joe Jonas), Nate Gray (Nick Jonas) and Jason Gray (Kevin Jonas).

While fans may be eager to see Mitchie back at Camp Rock, director Veronica Rodriguez says her role was carefully designed to ensure that the new cast gets its moment.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez revealed that the team had several discussions with Lovato about finding the right balance for Mitchie's return without overshadowing the new characters.

The filmmaker explained that Mitchie herself acknowledges in the movie that the spotlight now belongs to the next generation of campers. According to Rodriguez, the returning characters remain important to the story while giving the newcomers enough space to establish their own identities.

Demi Lovato also recently made a surprise appearance at her co-stars Jonas Brothers' JONAS20 tour opener at MetLife Stadium.

New stars take centre stage in Camp Rock 3

This time around, Connect 3 heads back to Camp Rock after losing its opening act for a major reunion tour. The band begins a search for the next big musical talent, bringing a fresh crop of performers into the spotlight.

Liamani Segura and Malachi Barton lead the new generation, with Lumi Pollack, Sherry Cola, Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter, Brooklynn Pitts and Ava Jean also joining the cast.

Directed by Rodriguez from a screenplay by Eydie Faye, Camp Rock 3 is produced by Disney Kids & Family, with choreography by Jamal Sims. Lovato and the Jonas Brothers are among the executive producers.

The original Camp Rock premiered in 2008, followed by Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam in 2010. Both films became major Disney Channel hits, ranking among the network's most-watched original movies.

With Lovato and the Jonas Brothers back, Camp Rock 3 is clearly betting on nostalgia, but this time, it is also handing the mic to a brand-new generation.
