Steven Spielberg returns to familiar territory with Disclosure Day, a sci-fi thriller that blends conspiracies and extraterrestrial encounters.
The film follows Daniel Kelner (Josh O'Connor), a former employee of the secretive Wardex facility who steals classified files documenting decades of alien encounters and cover-ups. Convinced that humanity deserves to know the truth, Daniel goes on the run while Wardex launches a relentless effort to recover the stolen material. When his girlfriend Jane (Ewe Hewson) gets caught in the crossfire, Daniel's mission becomes even more urgent.
One of the film's biggest strengths is that it doesn't spend its entire runtime teasing the existence of aliens. Instead, Disclosure Day focuses on the people connected to the secret and the consequences of finally exposing it.
Emily Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a weather broadcaster at KCXE 4 whose life changes after a strange encounter with a cardinal bird. Following the incident, Margaret develops an extraordinary ability that allows her to instantly understand a person's thoughts and memories simply by looking into their eyes. Daniel possesses a different gift altogether, an innate understanding of mathematics that functions as a universal language.
As the story unfolds, Margaret and Daniel begin uncovering long-buried memories from their childhoods. Both received their abilities around the age of 10, yet neither remembers much about the period before then. Hugo Wakefeild (Coleman Domingo) eventually leads them to their truth, one of the film's most intriguing characters.
The film also introduces an interesting concept in which the extraterrestrials rarely appear in a conventional form. Instead, they manifest through animals, including foxes and birds, creating several memorable and quietly unsettling moments throughout the film.
Emily Blunt delivers one of the film's strongest performances, grounding the increasingly ambitious narrative with genuine emotion and vulnerability. She convincingly portrays Margaret's confusion, curiosity and eventual determination as she comes to terms with her abilities and her place within a much larger story.
O'Connor is equally compelling, carrying much of the film's emotional weight while serving as the driving force behind its central conflict. Together, the two leads make the film's more fantastical elements feel believable.
Visually, Disclosure Day is exactly what audiences would expect from Spielberg. The scale is impressive, the atmosphere is immersive, and the suspense is consistently effective. The film's final act, which builds toward the long-awaited public disclosure of extraterrestrial life, is particularly gripping.
Its biggest weakness lies in the explanation of Daniel and Margaret's powers. While the revelations surrounding their forgotten childhoods are intriguing, the film never fully explores why they were chosen or what they ultimately learn from their experiences. Even the ending, which culminates in a powerful final message and a simple instruction to "listen", leaves audiences with more questions than answers.
Yet that ambiguity is also part of the film's appeal. Spielberg isn't interested in handing viewers a neat explanation. Instead, he leaves room for interpretation.
Disclosure Day is an engaging sci-fi thriller packed with strong performances, compelling ideas and Spielberg's trademark sense of wonder. It may not answer every question it raises, but it delivers an entertaining and thought-provoking ride that's well worth experiencing on the big screen.
