Rahul Gandhi and Thalapathy Vijay
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday came out in support of the Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan and attacked the Centre after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) put the film's certification on hold, calling it an attack on Tamil culture.
He said PM Modi would not succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people. In a post on X, the Congress leader wrote, "The I&B Ministry's attempt to block 'Jana Nayagan' is an attack on Tamil culture. Mr Modi, you will never succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people."
His remarks come after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to hold the certification for the Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan on the grounds that certain scenes in the movie could potentially hurt religious sentiments.
However, when the makers of the movie approached the High Court, Vijay's starrer initially received a favourable outcome as a single-judge bench directed the censor board to grant the U/A 16+ certification.
While the matter is currently being heard in the Madras High Court, the makers have now moved the Supreme Court, challenging the order passed by the High Court's division bench.
The plea in the Supreme Court was filed by KVN Productions, which is backing Vijay's final film. Notably, the petition was filed on the same day the actor arrived in Delhi for questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Karur stampede during his TVK rally, in which 41 people lost their lives on September 27, 2025.
After the film failed to release on January 9, Venkat K Narayana, the founder of KVN produtions clarified the issue sharing their perspective on the whole situation.
Taking to their official social media handles, KVN Productions has uploaded a video clarifying the entire controversy. They said, "To everyone who has been waiting for our film Jana Nayagan with immense love and anticipation, we extend our sincere gratitude. Over the past few days, we have received countless calls and messages and each one reminds us how deeply this film is already love. We wish to place certain facts before you while respectfully acknowledging that the matter is currently subjoined which limits what we can and cannot say."
