Kamal Haasan has reacted to the recent verdict sentencing nine policemen to death in the high-profile Sathankulam custodial death case, expressing both anguish over the crime and clarity on his stand against capital punishment.
Responding to the judgment, Kamal strongly condemned the brutality faced by the victims, calling the incident deeply disturbing. He said the father-son duo were "beaten to death by the police," adding that such acts were carried out "without the slightest compassion" by those entrusted with upholding the law.
The case, which dates back to 2020, involved the custodial deaths of P. Jeyaraj and his son J. Bennix, sparking nationwide outrage and renewed conversations around police accountability. A Madurai court's decision to award the death penalty to all nine accused policemen has now brought a sense of closure to the long legal battle.
While Kamal welcomed the verdict and acknowledged the efforts of those who fought for justice, he reiterated his long-standing opposition to the death penalty. "Personally, I am against the death penalty," he said, making it clear that even in cases of severe crimes, he believes in alternative forms of punishment.
Elaborating on his stance, Kamal stated that individuals guilty of heinous acts should instead face life imprisonment with strict conditions. He suggested that such punishment should be rigorous and without concessions, ensuring accountability while avoiding capital punishment.
At the same time, the actor-politician also reflected on the broader consequences of the crime, pointing out that the actions of the convicted policemen had affected not just the victims but also their own families. He noted that such inhumane acts bring "immense suffering" to innocent family members on all sides.
Kamal further called for accountability beyond just the convicted officers. He emphasized that those who allegedly attempted to suppress the truth or failed in their duties should also face strict action. According to him, justice must extend to everyone involved in enabling or covering up such crimes.
Concluding his remarks, Kamal stressed the importance of the rule of law, asserting that no one should feel protected by power or authority when committing crimes. He underlined that atrocities carried out under the guise of authority must be firmly punished to prevent such incidents in the future.
His response reflects a balanced stance condemning the crime unequivocally while advocating for justice that aligns with his principles against capital punishment.
