Rana Daggubati and Prabhas from Baahubali
Rana Daggubati, an actor and producer, is busy promoting his new film Kaantha. In addition, he was reminded of the re-release of Baahubali: The Epic, one of his most memorable films. The actor spoke with Galatta Plus about his experience seeing the film and how it was appreciated by the crowd, virtually setting a precedent for Indian cinema.
When asked if he had been able to see the 3-hour 40-minute edit of the film, Rana responded yes and revealed what it is like to watch the film a decade after its debut. He said, "It is fun because that was the first story that was told to us. It was supposed to be one film at some point. It was just a long one film⦠it was just so amazing to revisit that, and that we got to see it a decade later and it still has aged beautifully, on the big screen."
Rana went on to add, "In India, you grow up with stories of mythology, stories of wars and gods and kings, and the only reference you have as a feature film is Baahubali⦠that this is how the warriors of Mahabharat could have been. The fact that it came on screen, with a vision of someone like Mr Rajamouli who pushed each boundary- that whole team just went all out to make that film. That's something that will always be the largest impact of my life."
The film combines Rajamouli's blockbusters Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Prabhas plays two characters, while Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj, Rana Daggubati, and Nassar play crucial roles. The re-release was remastered, with both the sound and images completely overhauled before it returned to theatres.
Earlier, SS Rajamouli had mentioned that quite a few parts from the films were removed to create The Epic. "By merging both parts and removing the rolling titles, the total duration would have been around five hours and 27 minutes. The current version, however, runs for three hours and 43 minutes. Major portions that were removed include Avanthika's love story with Shivudu, the songs Pacha Bottesina, Kanna Nidurinchara, and Irrukupo. Several sequences from the war episodes have also been trimmed," Rajamouli said.
