Legendary singer S Janaki to be laid to rest with full state honours

Legendary singer and four-time National Award winner S Janaki, who rendered a whopping 48,000 songs in several Indian languages, passed away at a private hospital here on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was 88. As per the latest update, the veteran singer will be laid to rest with full state honours.

S Janaki to be accorded state honours

Taking to social media, Mysuru district in-charge minister Dr S Yathindra mentioned that S Janaki's mortal remains will be kept at Maharaja College Grounds from 7.30 am on Sunday for public homage. Deccan Chronicle reported that, given her immense contribution to music, the Karnataka government has decided to accord her full state honours.

Actors Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi, and producer Boney Kapoor paid tribute to one of India's greatest singers, S Janaki. Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi penned a glorious tribute to the singer. Taking to his X timeline, he wrote in Telugu, "The news of Janakamma garu's passing has left me deeply shaken."

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay expressed sorrow over Janaki's demise, mentioning her contribution to Indian film music across multiple languages. His rumoured girlfriend, Trisha, also penned a heartfelt note, stating, "Carrying your name in one of my most special films will forever be one of the greatest honours of my life. But knowing you and being loved by you is something I'll cherish forever."

S Janaki Amma, who began her singing career at the age of 19 by singing for the Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu, emerged as a star in no time. She sang an impressive 100 songs in six Indian languages within her first year as a professional singer. She was probably the only singer who could alter her voice and sing both like a six-year-old child and a sixty-year-old person.

Janaki Amma, as she was lovingly called by scores of fans across the world, won a phenomenal number of awards, including four National Awards and 33 state film awards.

The news of S Janaki's demise was first shared by her granddaughter, Apsara Vydyula, through an emotional social media post. She revealed that the singer passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.
