Actor-turned-politician Vijay officially took oath as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday, marking a historic political moment for the state. The swearing-in ceremony witnessed loud cheers, emotional celebrations, and the presence of several celebrities, political leaders, and supporters who gathered to witness the TVK chief step into his new role.
Popularly known as "Thalapathy," Vijay's political rise has been closely followed ever since he launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). After emerging as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK secured enough backing from alliance partners to form the government, ending decades of dominance by the DMK and AIADMK.
The grand ceremony began amid massive security arrangements, with thousands of fans gathering around the stadium carrying TVK flags and chanting Vijay's name. Dressed in a crisp white outfit, Vijay took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu while supporters erupted into applause inside and outside the venue. Several ministers were also sworn into the cabinet alongside him.
Among the celebrities who grabbed attention at the ceremony was Trisha Krishnan, who arrived in an elegant silk saree adorned with jasmine flowers. Videos of her warmly greeting Vijay's family members quickly went viral online. Before heading to the venue, Trisha briefly told reporters that she was "looking forward" to the big day, sparking excitement among fans.
Social media was soon flooded with congratulatory messages from celebrities and filmmakers. Filmmaker Pa Ranjith wrote, "Heartfelt congratulations to the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Thiru. Joseph Vijay @TVKVijayHQ, who is set to assume the role of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. I am confident that you will lead a people-welfare government."
Veteran actor and politician Kamal Haasan also shared a heartfelt note that read, "May the state of Tamil Nadu shine under the leadership of the president of the Tamil Nadu Victory League, the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, my brother Thiru. Vijay TVKVijayHQ. May it reach new heights. I convey my heartfelt congratulations."
He further added, "Heartfelt congratulations to the Indian National Congress, the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Indian Union Muslim League, which have extended their support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government by respecting the verdict of the people."
Actor Sathyaraj also released a special video congratulating Vijay on becoming Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister. Meanwhile, filmmaker and actor RJ Balaji wrote, "Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu C. Joseph Vijay!!! This feels insane ..!!! Congratulations to you and to your cabinet of ministersâ¦!!! Knowing you and your intentions, look forward to your inclusive and progressive government taking our glorious state to the next level!!! Wishing you only the best sir.! Godbless us all !!"
Videos and pictures from the event instantly dominated social media timelines, with fans celebrating Vijay's transition from cinema superstar to political leader. Many supporters described the moment as emotional, calling it the beginning of a "new era" in Tamil Nadu politics. Vijay's parents, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and Shoba Chandrasekhar, were also seen attending the ceremony and celebrating his achievement.
For Vijay's massive fanbase, the oath-taking ceremony symbolised far more than a political victory.
