Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, accused of assaulting doctors and nurses at a municipal hospital in Dombivli, surrendered before the police on Sunday after the Bombay High Court stayed the bail granted to him by a lower court, reported the PTI.
Mhatre surrendered before the Dombivli police and was later produced before the Kalyan magistrate court. The court sent him to judicial custody till August 3, an official said.
The development came a day after the Bombay High Court took suo motu cognisance of the case and cancelled the bail granted to Mhatre and four other accused.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra V Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad described the July 14 bail order passed by the Kalyan court as "perverse", according to the PTI.
The Bombay High Court observed that the magistrate court had not properly considered the seriousness of the allegations or the criminal background of the accused while granting bail.
The court also cancelled the bail granted to the other four accused booked in connection with the assault.
Mhatre, a corporator of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), was arrested along with his associates for allegedly attacking doctors and nurses at a civic hospital in Dombivli on July 6, as per the PTI.
According to police, the incident took place after a family was advised to shift a newborn baby to another medical facility.

The police also arrested one of the women accused in the case on Sunday, the news agency reported.
The incident had triggered protests from medical associations, with doctors demanding stronger protection measures and strict action against those involved in attacks on healthcare workers.
Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Maharashtra has suspended its planned 24-hour statewide strike on July 20 following the Bombay High Court's decision to stay the bail granted to the accused in the assault on doctors and healthcare workers at a civic hospital in Dombivli, reported the PTI.
However, the association warned that the suspension is only temporary and said it would launch an indefinite statewide strike from August 9 if the Maharashtra government fails to meet its demands for stronger protection of healthcare professionals, the news agency reported.
The development comes a day after the Bombay High Court stayed the bail granted to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who is accused in the assault case.
A court in Thane had granted Mhatre bail on July 14. Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, the Bombay High Court later suspended the bail order and directed the accused to surrender before the authorities by Sunday evening.
