Oshiwara Police in Mumbai arrested two men from Rajasthan for allegedly cheating a woman through a fake investment scheme promoted on a social media platform, officials said.

The accused allegedly attracted victims by promising huge returns on small payments and then persuaded them to make multiple transactions.

According to the police, the case came to light after an Oshiwara resident approached the police following the alleged fraud on July 12.

"The woman had reportedly come across a Facebook page called "wizard traders 7", which advertised a scheme promising a return of Rs 9,999 for a payment of just Rs 99," said a police official.

After clicking on the link, she was directed to a conversation on an instant messaging and calling application with an unidentified person who explained the alleged investment scheme.

The woman initially transferred Rs 99 through online payment. However, the suspects allegedly contacted her repeatedly and persuaded her to make several more payments, the official said.

According to the police, she eventually carried out 22 transactions until around 3.30 am, losing a total of Rs 73,521.

Police track suspects to Rajasthan

Following the complaint, the Oshiwara cyber team began analysing the digital and financial trails linked to the transactions.

Investigators traced the suspected operators of the social media page to Rajasthan. A police team then travelled to Dausa and Jaipur and searched for the suspects for four days as they allegedly kept changing locations.

With assistance from officers of Shivdaspura police station in Jaipur, the Mumbai police team reportedly laid a trap and arrested the two men.

Mobile phones, SIM cards seized

The accused have been identified as 21-year-old Deepak Sitaram Meena and 30-year-old Harkesh Gopal Meena, both residents of Rajasthan, police said.

Police recovered three mobile phones worth around Rs 70,000, along with 11 SIM cards, a debit card and QR scanner code.

Accused sent to police custody

The two accused were brought to Mumbai and produced before a court in Andheri.

The court remanded them to police custody until September 7, said the official.

Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether the accused were involved in other similar cyber fraud cases.
