Goregaon Police in Mumbai on Thursday arrested two men in connection with the murder of a 29-year-old man, who was allegedly beaten to death after intervening in a dispute over a hotel bill.
The accused were arrested within 24 hours of the incident and have been remanded to police custody until August 23, 2026, for further questioning, police said.
The incident took place outside Salman Hotel on Vasari Hill Road in Prem Nagar, Goregaon (West).
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Aziz Mohammad Atiq Khan, was a resident of Prem Nagar and worked as a cement and gravel supplier.
Police said he had gone to the hotel with his colleague, Rajesh, also known as Takla.
According to the police, two other customers allegedly refused to pay the full food bill of Rs 260, offering only Rs 200 to hotel owner Danish Khan.
When Aziz intervened and asked the men to pay the remaining amount, an argument reportedly broke out.
Police said the two suspects allegedly became aggressive and threatened Aziz before attacking him and his colleague.
The duo allegedly assaulted the men with their hands and wooden planks broken from nearby fruit crates.
Aziz suffered serious injuries to his head and collapsed at the scene.
Local residents and his brother, Mohammad Habib Khan, rushed him to Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari (East). However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the Goregaon Police registered Crime No. 922/2026 under Sections 103(1), 115(2), 351(3), 352 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police formed six teams to identify and trace the suspects.
Investigators examined CCTV footage from the area, conducted field inquiries and followed confidential information to track down the alleged assailants.
Police identified the suspects as Ajay Munni Upadhyay, 39, unemployed and a resident of Hanuman Nagar, Goregaon (West) and Vikas Devraj Paswan, 23, an office boy and resident of Prem Nagar, Goregaon (West).
Both men were arrested at around 2.43 am on August 13, police said.
They were subsequently produced before a court, which remanded them to police custody until August 23.
The investigation was carried out under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police Shashi Kumar Mina and Deputy Commissioner of Police Purushottam Karad.
The Goregaon Police Station team was led by Senior Police Inspector Satish Umre, along with investigating officer Police Inspector Sohan Peche and the Crime Detection Squad.
The team was commended for identifying and arresting both suspects within 24 hours of the alleged murder.
