Mumbai: Two injured after being hit by BEST bus while crossing the road in Kandivali

A woman and another pedestrian were injured in an accident involving a BEST wet-lease electric bus near Poisar Bus Depot in Mumbai's Kandivali, officials said.

Police said preliminary investigations and CCTV footage suggest the pedestrians may not have been fully aware of their surroundings while crossing the road.

The accident took place at around 11.50 am on Monday near Poisar Bus Depot in Kandivali. The injured woman, identified as Sonam Maurya, suffered serious head and leg injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Bharatratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital in Kandivli.

The second injured pedestrian, 24-year-old Adarsh Hiralal Yadav, sustained minor injuries to his shoulder and right eye.

CCTV Footage Suggests Pedestrian Negligence

According to Kandivli Police, initial findings indicate that the pedestrians may have been negligent while crossing the road.

A police official said CCTV footage showed the pair crossing the road and coming into contact with the bus shortly after stepping past a road divider. Investigators stated that both injured individuals admitted they were not sufficiently cautious while crossing.

Police also confirmed that neither pedestrian wished to file a complaint against the driver.

Investigation continues

Although no case has been registered so far, police have documented the incident and are examining all available evidence.

Officials have called the bus driver to record his statement and said a suo motu case could be considered if further evidence or eyewitness accounts reveal additional factors.

BEST accident report

According to BEST's accident report, Bus No. 8421 on Route A-277/38 had departed from Borivali Station (West) and was travelling towards Kandivali Station (West).

The bus, operated under the wet-lease EV Trans-MAH arrangement from Gorai Depot, was passing near Poisar Depot when the two pedestrians came into contact with the vehicle.

BEST stated that the conductor immediately arranged for both injured individuals to be taken to Shatabdi Hospital for medical treatment.

Dadar BEST bus accident

In a separate incident on the same morning, another wet-lease air-conditioned BEST bus of a similar model was involved in a fatal accident near Plaza Cinema in Dadar.

The crash resulted in the death of a delivery executive and left six others injured. The incident marked the eighth major accident involving a BEST bus over the past two years.

The officials were investigating whether the Dadar accident was caused by human error, a technical fault, or a combination of factors.
