Tardeo Police in Mumbai have arrested four men and detained a juvenile in connection with the alleged theft of electrical copper cables from Mumbai Coastal Road, officials said on Friday.
Police said the suspects allegedly targeted street-lighting infrastructure on the Dharmaveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Marg (Mumbai Coastal Road), with the case being cracked within 48 hours.
The theft took place between 3 am and 3.15 am on August 12, near the NSCI Dome.
According to the complaint filed by 36-year-old Tufankumar Sudarshan Panda, unidentified persons allegedly cut and removed blue PVC-sheathed, four-core copper cables running between streetlight poles 725 and 728.
The cables, which were 35 sq mm in thickness and carried the KEI brand, were valued at around Rs 2.62 lakh, police said.
Tardeo Police registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A police team analysed CCTV footage, technical information and inputs from informants during the investigation.
The team, led by Assistant Police Inspector Dilip Tambe and Police Sub-Inspector Pradeep Marathe, carried out searches in Worli and Kalyan and arrested four suspects.
The arrested accused have been identified as Husain Kadar Shaikh alias Choko, 39, a fisherman from Worli, Nur Mohammad Amir Khan, 19, a fisherman from Worli, Aman Bilal Shaikh, 22, a fisherman from Worli and Jakar Shabbir Shaikh, 19, a fisherman from Kalyan East.
A juvenile was also detained in Worli. He will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, Mumbai Police said.
Police are investigating whether the accused are linked to other incidents of cable or infrastructure theft along the Coastal Road.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner Vikram Deshmane, Deputy Commissioner Jayant Meena and Tardeo Senior Inspector Meena Jagtap.
Further investigation is underway.
