The Virar police are on the lookout for a 23-year-old man who is accused of raping his 14-year-old niece and making her pregnant. The crime came to light after the teenager delivered a baby. The police said the girl's parents work at a brick kiln at Vasai and the family belongs to a village in Kolhapur district. The survivor apart, the family has two younger siblings aged 8 and 5 years.

The girl, a Class 8 student, and her family had visited her mother's sister in Virar. While her parents went to Vasai for work and took along their youngest child, the survivor and her sister stayed back at her aunt's house. The police said the accused, her maternal uncle, too used to live there at the time. "The girl said the uncle raped her more than once during her stay in Virar but she was too nervous to report him. After sometime, her parents left her at their native place to let her continue her studies and returned to the brick kiln with their other two kids," said a police officer from Virar.

The family said nobody in their village realised that the girl was pregnant until she recently complained of stomach ache. They took her to a hospital where she delivered a baby girl. It was then they learnt about the role of her maternal uncle and approached the local police. While the baby is with the survivor's family, the case was transferred to Virar on February 16. "The uncle has been booked for rape under IPC and the POCSO. We are searching for him," said an officer from Virar police.
