Borivali Police, during the late hours of Tuesday, arrested four accused for allegedly demanding Rs 30 lakh in extortion from a jewellery shop owner by posing as members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
According to police sources, the accused had allegedly made a threatening call to the jeweller, invoking the name of the notorious gang and warning of dire consequences if the money was not paid.
Acting swiftly, the Borivali Police devised a trap. Officers posed as the complainant and engaged in conversations with the accused, continuing negotiations while monitoring their movements.
Furthermore, the suspects were lured to Mumbai on the pretext of collecting the extortion money. On Tuesday night, police arrested all four accused during the operation.
Sources further revealed that in recent days, similar extortion cases have been registered at DN Nagar Police Station and Vile Parle Police Station, where jewellers received threats in the name of the same gang and were asked to pay money.
Police are now investigating whether the arrested individuals are directly linked to the gang or if they were misusing its name to extort businessmen.
The accused are scheduled to be produced before a local court on Wednesday, where police will seek their remand for further investigation.
