Two transgender persons held after video of attack on passenger in Mumbai local train goes viral

Two transgender persons have been detained after a video showing the alleged assault of a passenger on a Mumbai local train went viral on social media, officials said on Monday.

According to the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the incident came to light after the video circulated widely on social media on July 19.

The RPF post at Dadar (Western Railway) coordinated with the RPF post at Central Railway to analyse CCTV footage and monitor railway stations.

During surveillance, RPF personnel at Dadar Central Railway Station identified the two individuals on Platform 12 and brought them to the RPF post for questioning.

The reason for dispute

During questioning, the two individuals allegedly told officials that the incident took place on a local train between Mahim and Bandra while they were asking passengers for money, the officials said.

They claimed that an argument began after a passenger behaved rudely towards them, which led to a physical altercation.

Suspects handed over to GRP

As the alleged assault fell within the jurisdiction of the Government Railway Police (GRP), the RPF handed both individuals over to the GRP Mumbai Central for further legal action.

The GRP has registered a case under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the alleged assault and has begun further investigation.

The officials said the case was registered on July 20 and legal proceedings are underway.
