Parksite Police in Mumbai have arrested a 25-year-old alleged habitual offender and claimed to have solved three mobile theft cases within five hours of registering one of the complaints, officials said.
The accused has been identified as Firoz Mohammed Shakeel Sheikh, alias Chuhha.
Police said that the CCTV footage and technical information helped them trace and arrest him during the investigation.
According to police, a case was registered on September 8 under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after a complainant reported that a mobile phone had been stolen following an alleged house trespass.
Police began investigating the complaint and analysed CCTV footage and technical information to identify the suspect.
Their investigation led them to Sheikh, who was subsequently arrested.
Following his arrest, police carried out further questioning and investigation. They recovered nine mobile phones valued at around Rs 1.48 lakh, police said.
Investigators also linked Sheikh to three mobile theft cases registered at Parksite police station.
Police said the cases were detected within around five hours of the initial complaint being registered.
Police said Sheikh allegedly has 20 previous cases registered against him at Parksite, Ghatkopar, Pantnagar and Nirmal Nagar police stations.
The previous cases allegedly involve offences including theft, housebreaking, robbery and illegal possession of weapons.
Police are now investigating the recovered mobile phones and their connection with the other cases.
The accused has been taken through the legal process, while further investigation is underway.
