Nine Ugandan and Kenyan nationals held in Mumbai's Powai for illegal stay in India

The Powai Police in Mumbai have detained nine foreign nationals from Uganda and Kenya for allegedly staying illegally in the city after the expiry of their visas, police said.

The action followed a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, to crack down on foreign nationals suspected of engaging in illegal activities within their jurisdiction, officials said.

According to police officials, special teams had been monitoring the movements of several Nigerian and other foreign nationals in the Powai area. Acting on specific intelligence, a raid was carried out on 1 October at Hotel Dream Inn, near Prime Academy School, Marol, where the women were found to be residing despite their visas having expired.

The women, identified as Namunge Gloria (22), Nabisubi Esther (20), Kuriya Susan Wambuyi (33), Enjeri Beth (28), Bere Celestine (28), Mewade Mere Sovinya (24), Nguku Joyce Wanjiru (33), Nugera Sarah Chajiko (28), and Mesdinch Nelly Chepkororia (27), were taken into custody by the Women's Police unit. Deportation proceedings have been initiated against them.

Police said the women were allegedly concealing their identities while continuing to reside in Mumbai.

The operation was conducted under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime & Law & Order) Satyanarayan, Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Region) Paramjit Singh Dahiya, DCP (Zone 10) Datta Nalawade, and ACP (Sakinaka Division) Pradip Nerale, along with senior police officers and teams from Powai, Marol, Ghatkopar, and JJ Marg police stations.
