Mumbai Police have arrested a man from Delhi in connection with a chain-snatching case registered at Goregaon Police Station.
The case was registered under Section 309(4) and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita last month.
The complainant, Sai Rahul Mohan Sundar (30), approached police after his 15-gram gold chain was snatched opposite Manthan Hotel on MG Road in Goregaon West on February 15.
Two unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle near the hotel and allegedly threatened the complainant. They then snatched his gold chain before fleeing the spot.
After Sundar registered a complaint, police scanned footage from nearly 320 government and private CCTV cameras covering the crime scene and possible escape routes. Technical analysis helped them identify the suspects. According to police, the accused had stayed at a hotel in Goregaon.
Based on the verified ID proofs submitted at the hotel and mobile location tracking, three suspects were identified. Under the guidance of senior officers, three teams were formed and dispatched to Sector 24 in Delhi's Rohini area.
With assistance from Begumpur Police Station, a trap was laid and the accused, Kartik Kishanchand Tanwar (23), was apprehended from the area. His family members were informed as per procedure, and he was brought to Mumbai. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and was formally arrested following Supreme Court guidelines.
Police recovered the gold chain from him and are now on the lookout for the other two accused, Krishna Satish Yadav (36) and another suspect from Rohini Sector 24 in Delhi.
The operation was led by senior officers of Mumbai Police, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11) Sandeep Jadhav and Senior Inspector Suryakant Kharat, along with officers and staff from the crime detection team.
