The Navghar police have booked a Thane-based man for allegedly cheating a 42-year-old woman from Mulund East of over Rs 31 lakh in marriage fraud over the course of four years.
The accused, Kamlesh Moti Dalvi, came in contact with the complainant in 2020 while the two were working at a call centre.
She alleged that since November 1, 2020, Dalvi claimed business losses and borrowed money from her. In July 2022, she introduced him to her family, but he repeatedly postponed the wedding, citing deaths in his family. In February 2024, she asked him to either fix a date or return her money. On December 5, 2024, the two got married in the presence of her family. He even made her pay for the mangalsutra, but didn't buy it.
After the wedding, Dalvi allegedly claimed he did not have a house. He continued to borrow money from her, but they never lived together. She then lodged a police complaint. They have launched a manhunt to find the accused, confirmed Parag Sonawane, senior police inspector of Navghar police station.
