A 37-year-old man was arrested after allegedly strangling his wife to death at their home in Maharashtra's Thane city before walking into a police station and surrendering, officials said on Friday.
The incident took place on Thursday in the Savarkar Nagar area under the jurisdiction of the Vartak Nagar Police Station. Police said the couple's two children were at school when the alleged crime occurred.
According to police, the victim, identified as 30-year-old Pooja Tupe, lived with her husband, Nitin Tupe, and their two children.
Investigators said Nitin allegedly used a dupatta to strangle his wife inside their residence while the children were away at school.
Police said the alleged murder was triggered by the accused's suspicion regarding his wife's fidelity.
"The accused harboured serious doubts over the loyalty of his wife, which he claimed acted as the trigger for the fatal assault," said Senior Inspector Pravin Mane.
After the incident, Nitin allegedly informed an acquaintance about the crime before heading to the police station to surrender.
Police took him into custody immediately after he confessed to the incident.
A murder case has been registered against the accused, and further investigation is underway.
Officials said the couple's two children are currently in the care of their relatives.
Investigators are examining the circumstances leading to the alleged murder and recording statements from family members and neighbours as part of the investigation.
Police have not disclosed whether there had been any previous complaints of domestic disputes involving the couple.
In a separate incident, a 24-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death in Mumbai's Shivajinagar area following an argument over repayment of borrowed money and a long-standing family dispute.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night in the MHADA Colony.
According to police, the victim, Riyaz Shaikh, was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital after the attack but succumbed to his injuries during treatment in the early hours of Thursday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused and the deceased were childhood friends but had been involved in a prolonged family dispute. Police said one of the accused had also allegedly lent Rs 1,500 to Shaikh.
On Wednesday night, while Shaikh was sitting near a water tank outside a residential building, the accused and his associates allegedly confronted him over the unpaid amount.
A heated argument reportedly followed, during which the main accused allegedly stabbed Shaikh in the abdomen with a sharp weapon.
Investigators said two other accused allegedly assisted in the assault.
Police have registered a case against all three accused and taken them into custody. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and the exact motive behind the attack.
