The Thane city police have arrested a 30-year-old man for killing his lover following a dispute over her alleged affair with another person, an official said on Wednesday.
Accused Nandkishore Gadekar committed the crime on Tuesday at a lodge located within the jurisdiction of the Thane Nagar police station, he said.
"The accused was in a relationship with the victim, a resident of Bhandup who was estranged from her husband," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-I) Balasaheb Patil.
Gadekar told the police that despite being separated from her husband and in a relationship with him for the past five years, the woman was allegedly involved with another individual.
The accused took the woman to a lodge, where he smothered her with a pillow and fled the scene. The murder came to light when the lodge staff checked the room and found the woman unresponsive.
"The victim's body was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem. Police subsequently tracked down Gadekar and took him into custody," the official said.
In a separate incident, a 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing a 52-year-old farmer in Maharashtra's Thane district over his "affair" with the victim's wife, police have said.
Accused Deu Mangal fatally attacked victim, a resident of Shahapur taluka, on July 16.
Mangal was arrested after the man''s 36-year-old wife informed cops about his body lying in a gorge with injuries on the neck, said Superintendent of Police (Thane Rural) Vinaykumar Rathod.
Police said the accused claimed that he was in an illicit relationship with the farmer's wife and viewed him as a hurdle in their affair.
He attacked the victim with an axe near the latter's field, Rathod said.
Through technical surveillance, field analysis, and local intelligence, the investigation team zeroed in on Mangal and took him into custody, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly beating her husband with a pressure cooker lid and strangling him to death following a domestic dispute over not bringing her sarees, an official said on Wednesday.
Accused Sunitadevi Hareram Singh, originally from Rohtas district in Bihar, was arrested on Tuesday. Police said she had initially attempted to mislead them by reporting the death as accidental.
