Two brothers were shot dead and their uncle was critically injured after unidentified attackers allegedly opened fire on them in Ulhasnagar township in Maharashtra's Thane district on Thursday night, police said, reported PTI.

The incident took place around 8.30 pm in the Kailash Colony area, triggering panic among local residents and leading to a heavy police deployment in the locality.

Attackers allegedly fired around 15 rounds

According to information shared by the Ulhasnagar police control room, a group of assailants allegedly fired nearly 15 rounds at the victims before fleeing from the scene, reported PTI.

Police said the two brothers sustained multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot.

Their uncle, who was also targeted in the firing, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Thane for treatment, reported PTI.

"Two persons, who are brothers, died on the spot due to multiple gunshot wounds, while a third person, their uncle, sustained serious injuries," a police official said, reported PTI.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination.

Police cordon off area after incident

Soon after the firing, officials from the Hill Line police station and senior police personnel reached the spot and launched an investigation.

The entire locality was cordoned off as a precautionary measure, while additional security personnel were deployed to prevent any escalation and maintain law and order in the area.

The incident caused tension in the neighbourhood, with several residents gathering near the crime scene following the shooting.

CCTV footage being examined

Investigators have started examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the attackers and trace their movements before and after the incident, reported PTI.

Police officials said multiple teams have been formed to track down the suspects involved in the firing.

"The entire locality has been cordoned off, and security has been beefed up to maintain law and order. Police are checking CCTV footage," the official said, reported PTI.

Previous enmity suspected as possible motive

According to preliminary findings, police suspect that old rivalry or personal enmity could be the motive behind the attack.

Officials said they are exploring all angles and questioning people connected to the victims as part of the investigation.

"Preliminary investigations suggest the motive behind the indiscriminate firing is previous enmity," the police official added.

Further investigation into the case is underway, and police are yet to confirm the identities of the accused or make any arrests.
