In a shocking incident, the owner of a pet pit bull unleashed his dog on an 11-year-old to allegedly attack him in Mankhurd area of Mumbai, police said on Sunday.

The owner was the dog was held by the police following the incident as the video of the attack went viral on social media.

Police registered a case against the owner of the pit bull, who was arrested on Friday. However, he was later released after being issued a formal notice, said an official from Mumbai Police.

According to the police, the man has been arrested after his pet dog attacked and injured the boy in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, said an official.

The police said that the incident occurred on Thursday night in the Mankhurd area and was captured on video, which has since gone viral on social media, the official said.

According to a complaint filed by the injured boy's father, the owner of the dog was identified as Sohail Hasan Khan (43). He allegedly unleashed his pit bull on the child, who was playing inside a parked auto-rickshaw in a residential locality.

"On 17th July 2025 at around 10 pm, the complainant's minor son, was playing in a parked rickshaw in the residential area when the accused, Mohammad Sohail Khan -- an acquaintance from the same locality -- deliberately released his brown pet dog. Due to lack of control and supervision, the dog bit the child on the chin, causing injury. Based on the detailed statement of the complainant, an offence has been registered under the relevant sections at Mankhurd Police Station," said an official.

Further the video shows, the terrified child struggling to keep the dog away from him and he later jumps outside the auto-rickshaw.

The viral video shows that the dog chasing the child who is heard screaming in fear as passersby look on.

In the incident, the boy sustained injuries to his chin from the dog bite, the Mumbai Police official said.
