St Stanislaus High School (Bandra) beat Cathedral and John Connon (Fort) 1-0 in a boys U-16 Ahmed Sailor Dreams Sports MSSA inter-school knockout football at Azad Maidan on Wednesday.
The Cathedral boys began strongly and enjoyed more possession in the opening 10 minutes. After a goalless first half though, the St Stanislaus boys began to attack with purpose and were aptly rewarded with a goal.
Rudra Tambe swiftly reached for a cross sent in from the right by teammate Sharv Kamtekar to head home the winner (20th minute). The goal was enough to send St Stanislaus into the quarter-finals.
The Stanislaus boys did well, considering they had to play most of the match without their coach Melchior Fernandes in the dugout. Fernandes was shown the red card for speaking rudely to match official Hitendra Jay as passions rose during the closely-contested game.
