The incident took place around 9 pm yesterday, when the 21-year-old woman was passing by Powai lake in an auto rickshaw. The constable, identified as Pramod Nalavde, attached to Andheri police station, saw her passing and yelled out lewd comments.
Speaking to mid-day, the woman said, “I live in Powai and was heading home when the man shouted out ‘Item!’ I asked the auto driver to slow down and asked him why he had called me that. He began to argue with me. When I objected, he dragged me out of the auto, saying he was a cop.”
The constable then hurled abuses at her and began to assault her in public, at which point passers-by gathered and asked what he was doing. According to witnesses, he then yelled that he was with the Mumbai Police and would teach everyone a lesson if they interfered. The crowd thrashed him and held him there until the Powai police turned up to take him to the police station.
Sources from Powai police station said, “The girl and eyewitnesses were present at the police station. The accused identified himself as a constable attached to Andheri police station.” Joint Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti confirmed that Nalavde had been suspended and an FIR registered against him.
